Wanted: Proposals for school project

Ok, here’s the scoop.
We have to come up with project proposals for our final year of College.
This project is to be completed over the course of approximately 7 months in
groups of 4-5 people. My group consists of 4 people FYI.

Now, what I’d like is some good suggestions for possible projects (please,
no suggestions along the lines of “I want my GeForce to work”!!!). I was
planning on doing an ICQ clone for the RTP, but that’s been done a couple of
times now. So, if you have any suggestions, or software you’d like to see
on the RTP that could be completed by 4 programming semi-virings over the
course of 7 months (keep in mind we’ve still got a full course load), please
respond via email or publically in this newsgroup. QNX4/Neutrino project
ideas are also welcome.

Thankyou in advance,
Gary Dike

How about porting something rather BIG. Porting can be a nice
learning experience.

\

  • Musical editing application would be welcome.
  • CD-Writer software.
  • simple DNS cache software ( check out www.extratools.com ExtraDNS )
  • Mind reader
  • GPS software with map (that one could be fun and split well amongs
    4 people)

By the way GeForce do work

Is there any MP3 software available for RTP yet? That’s my vote.

If QNX4 is a possibility I’m sure most users would love a CD-Writer software
contribution.

The difficulty of doing it for QNX4 would be beyond resonable, due to
limitations of Fsys. For QRTP it is easier, but still makes little sense
until QSSL comes up with CAM support.

Yet? It’s been there since the early Alpha.

Some other ideas:

  1. System V IPC server/library.
This is the only remaining major hurdle for porting Linux apps into
QRTP. There is no much fun in writing it, but it will allow to learn
    system well.

  2. Photon based User Manager + good authentication system
It will be welcome by many users and will allow to learn Photon. I think
QSSL should come up with its own though. Also, at some point they were
talking about implementing PAM system. Would be nice to have NIS/NIS+
and may be Kerberos. Even fully working shadow passwords suite would be
nice - the shipped one SUCKS.

'aight I’ll delete it from my list then… :

group.

Yeah, WinAmp!

I think that has been done (already!)
See www.qnxstart.com

My two top votes would be…

  1. A “REAL” programmers editor for Photon.
I.e. a CodeWright style editor with code highlighting/block editing.
Some of the available text based editors would be good starting points.

  2. A Photon based mail program that works better than vmail.

I’m sure one will emerge

We are working on a V-Mail replacement. That is why we
haven’t made any improvements to V-Mail.
