i am trying to install the new qnx operating system (downloaded from get.qnx.com) on my toshiba satellite 210 cs notebook. it is a
littlebit old and does not have a cd rom drive. so i installed it
under windows 98 se. qnx does boot but it is not possible to start the
photon gui.
my notebook uses a chips&technologies graphics chip and i think these
chips are supported by qnx.
the program crttrap seems to determine the graphics capabilities and
it reports something like “safe mode 640 x 480”. but then after
displaying “devi-hirun kbd …” qnx stops working. is this a known
issue? what can i do?

Yes, there are known issues with Toshiba laptops failing in exactly
this way. It is being worked on.
In the meantime, your stuck with VGA, which probably looks awful since
640x480 is being display on an 800x600 panel
I’m using QNXRTP onto a Tosh 100/105cs/w95 (CT 65548, or 58 I guess). The
chip can 800x600x8bit and 640x480x16bit. With QNXRTP I have at the moment
just 640x480x4bit vga. But this I have!

Hi!
This is exactly my problem: I am not able to get the gui running on my
toshiba laptop. On my desktop computer everything works fine and it
looks amazing!
I managed to start photon on my toshiba laptop: Under DOS I used the
toshiba utility tsetup.exe to access the bios of my laptop. I changed
the video base address from E400h to C000h and now photon starts in
640 x 480.
As I wrote before, photon is working now (in standard VGA). Then I
tried to change the “graphics settings” (right click on the desktop).
I clicked on “Advanced” and adjusted the driver command line. I
changed the “-dldevg-vga.so” into “-dldevg-chips_hiqv.so”. Photon
tries to restart but after attempting to switch to video mode again it
prints out the following error “mode not found in table”.
I also tried to change the resolution “800x600x8” instead of
“640x480x8”. The same error again. Has anyone experiences in changing
the video driver? Is it possible to change the driver command line in
order to use a chips&technologies graphics chip?

Thank you!
that works fine - and looks terrible
but it’s one more step in the right direction - thanx again!

No problem! But, you are right: It looks awful! As I also posted on
this newsgroup: I wasn’t successful in changing the driver. If you
want to try it: It is no problem, if the new driver command line does
not work, after rebooting QNX it uses its old configuration and you
can try again.
BTW, I am very impressed of the speed. QNX is very fast on my old
notebook. It only lacks more resolution and colors.
In the case there is somebody, who still follows this thread: QNX now
works on my notebook with 800 x 600 x 16.
After changing the memory base address of my notebook to C000h (using
tsetup.exe) I reinstalled QNX. It then redetected my graphics card and
uses a vesa driver, which is able to run 800 x 600 x 16. Looks great.
Now I’ll have to find out, how to detect my sound card and pcmcia
network card.

Just curious, what was the base address before you changed it?
