Free QNX newbie w/questions...

Hello Everyone,

I am an OS junky… I admit it… I’m in fact looking for an OA meeting
(OS Anonymous). I have been waiting all summer for the QNX release and
finally got my chance yesterday. I installed it on three machines with
varying success.

Here’s the run down…

Desktop [AMD 450, 96mg, ATI Rage, addtron PCI ethernet]: Everything
works fine. Really impressed. Good job.

Desptop [486 dx4/100, 16mg, Trident, ne2000]: VGA mode, no network
(probably needs hand configuration). Painfully slow. Disappointed, but
expecting it.

Laptop [HP Omnibook 5500CT, 32mg, C&T 65548, 3COM 3c589b]: VGA mode
(CT65550 and up supported), no network. Disappointed, thought this
would work.

The last machine was the one I had really hoped to get working. I’ve
tried RH Linux 6.2 (works great but choppy mp3 playing), Beos (no video
support), Win9x (works great, but it’s windows), and now QNX. I want to
run something other than windows but would like to play mp3s and browse
the web.

Any ideas? I suppose my laptop hardware just isn’t supported, but
I thought I’d ask before giving up.

I’d really like something like QNX to throw on low end stuff (386,486,
16mg, isa video) for Internet machines. Any thoughts? Linux works fine
w/o X windows… but that’s no good for the web.

Thanks,
Jeff Volckaert

16 megs is VERY tight. It’s barely enough to boot.
