QNX RTP Support for Power PC

Does RTP support Power PC or when will there be support for Power PC.
Thanks

According to QSSL, Power PC will not be supported by RTP.
Power PC is already supported under Neutrino, it’s just
not free. Also, anything you develop under RTP should
port trivially to Neutrino/PPC, unless it uses hardware.
In that case, QSSL announced a while ago some tools to
make drivers cross platform compatible.

That’s not what they’ve told me. My understanding is that RtP will
support PowerPC, just like Neutrino does now.

The question is whether you’ll be able to find a PowerPC desktop machine
(i.e. a Macintosh) which will run RtP.

Or I could have completely misunderstood what my QNX rep said.

That is not what I have heard (same as Eric) QRTP will not run
on PowerPC, but you will be able to cross develop for all supported
processors.

If they ever release a free PowerPC QRTP it will probably be limited
the same PCI 603/604 PowerMacs as BeOS. The reason Linux can run on
newer Macs is because of Apple’s own work on a Linux before they
decided to drop it for OSX. There is still quite a bit of “hacked”
code in Linux PPC and MK Linux. An OS intended for “mission critical”
use cannot depend on code written with less than 100% knowledge
of the hardware platform.

Ok, I don’t know about cross development, and I suspect that
you may be right. Eric wrote to me and stated that he
believes that the Rtp, the platform, will be available for
PPC and Mips. This is what I’ve heard differently about.

Right.

As this thread continues, it seems to me that there is a confusion
between "running RtP on " and "RtP for my desktop machine
based on ". As I understand it all, RtP is really just the
latest version of Neutrino/Photon. Neutrino has run on multiple
processors for a while. The catch is that you couldn’t run Neutrino on
your desktop machine and develop for Neutrino on that desktop machine.

With RtP, you can run Rtp (i.e. Neutrino) on your desktop box if your
desktop box is x86. With the current RtP release, you can develop for
x86 on the RtP desktop machine. Soon, I’m told that QSSL will have the
cross-development toolset ported to RtP, so you’ll be able to use RtP on
your desktop x86 box to do all your development and cross-development.
Hence, we can say that RtP will run on PowerPC because my target may be
PPC (e.g. a 603-based CompactPCI card).

However, that is a far cry from saying that RtP will run on my desktop
PPC-based machine. That is unlikely to happen because of driver issues
that have been beaten to death in this and other threads.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Hum, name confusion here again, RtP will not run on PowerPC, Neutrino 2.1

and Photon
2.0 will run on PowerPC, not RtP. RtP is the packing of Neutrino 2.1
Photon + development tools target for the PC hardware.

So RtP on PC will be able to build PowerPC executable for Neutrino 2.1 and
Photon 2.0…
