Old. x86 16-bit protected mode or real mode only, very limitted hardware
support even in that environment, written in the 1980s. Did some really great
stuff with the 80286/80386/80486, but began to run into some problems
operating on Pentiums.

Was a micro-kernel message-passing OS with a mild Unix flavour.

QNX4

x86, originally 16-bit, now 32-bit, protected mode only, though it will still
run 16-bit programs. Does some really great stuff with 486s though recent
Pentiums.

Is a micro-kernel message-passing OS with a Unix look & feel.

QNX RTP

QNX Neutrino (a micro-kernel message-passing OS that tracks Posix and is
Multi-platform, including x86, PowerPC, Mips, ARM, and SH4) for the x86
packaged with a GUI, TCP/IP stack, development environment, browser, some
games and other toys to make a desktop environment and free for download.
(non-professional use only)

Basically, they are several different generations of OSes, as they
becomes more refined, and more powerful – while maintaining the core themes
and capabilities that we have found are important and useful.

– micro-kernel
– pre-emptive scheduling
– message-passing (blocking Send, Receive; non-blocking Reply)
– non-blocking notification
– Unix/Posix for compatibility
– fast context switch, low latencies

Hope this helps.
