how to get network traffic info?

Hello,

We are trying to find out why our Net process is taking up to 50% of the
CPU time - or is this normal?
Are there any utilities for looking at TCP/IP traffic, something like
tcpdump?

Cheers

50%, that’s a lot, what’s your CPU. Are you using QNX4 or QRTP?

Hi,

We have a Pentium II 500Mhz and we are running QNX 4.25.
Up to 15 people can have phindows sessions running on it and
we do a lot of remote syslogging. Any ideas how to get to
the bottom of this?

Cheers

Dorothea

Are you sure it’s all Net that using the CPU?
How did you check this, sysmon?

What is you network card, not ISA based I hope

Yes, I used sysmon. The network card is actually an old Ne2000
compatible ISA card. Didn’t get around exchanging it yet.

Ok, I try that. I will keep you posted whether it worked.

Try any PCI based card, you should see that 50% drop
rather drasticaly.

The problem with ISA is when the CPU access a device
on it, it must slow down to the speed of the BUS. So you’re
500Mzh CPU gets to run at ~8Mzh when talking to the network
card…

Most PCI card uses DMA, they CPU is not as involved as
with NE2000 card.
