QNX 4.25 Server

Greetings fellow QNX admins…

I’m looking to purchase a new QNX server. I was wondering if any of you
could perhaps give me some insight on what to purchase for a new server.

I should mention that I am going to be running QNX 4.25, that this will be
Node 1, running with TCP/IP, and Photon.

This server is specifically going to be used to do mass compiling, with
multiple PTerms running. 20 other nodes are going to connect to this server
(over TCP/IP, not QNX networking), and they in turn download code from the
server for configuration.

I do have a couple of questions to ask. First, anyone have a real kick-butt
system config that does the job well for approx 40+ users, 20+ nodes, that
can handle approx. 128 sessions, 600 procs, 150 timers at a 1ms tick?

My second question is… does QNX (or anyone out there) know of any 1GB
(over copper) NICs out there that work with 4.25? If so, can you let me
know which NIC and (if not a QNX supported driver) where I can find it?

Any machine with will do, really. For 40 user I’ go 256Meg of RAM
it will be plenty. But at the price of machines today is that really a
concern, Go
with 512Meg :wink: 256 meg is below 100$ US and you can get a 1.4Gig
Athlon for below 200 US. The idea is have a fast machine so that if 40
person are compiling at the same time they won’t have to wait forever :wink:
Otherwise if just for editing a 300Mzh machine will be plenty to
support 40 people.

I’d probably go with SCSI; as IDE under QNX4 doesn’t support
DMA. I assume SCSI uses DMA hence will require less CPU time and
will increase throughput.

I’d go with big SCSI HD, one being a back up of the other. Since
undelete is not easy on QNX4 having a daily backup can be life saving.
Not to mention fast recover time if the first HD was to fail. Tape backup
are nice, but nothing beats a second HD :wink:

I’ve heard QNX once did a 1G driver for a custom job, I don’t think it

was include in any release. Try contacting you sales representative.

Clearly you want the fastest cpu that’s available. I recommend a SCSI
card and drive, however I’m not sure where QSSL is with supporting
the latest Adaptec’s.

For network, I’d forget the Gigabit card.
If you find a single 100Mbit is not enough, add another.
