QNX: life for old 386 & 486 PC's?

I am resarching OS’s for old 386 & 486 PC’s. Hear is some of what i
done: As for LInux, Caldera needed 16 megs of RAM & 4 Gig hard drive.
Too much. In the past used DOS & Quikmenu. Worked great! Fast &
never crashed! Only single tasking. Neosoftware website is down.
They maybe out of Biz. Any suggestions or comments?

QNX4 is a nice solution now.

Both QNX 4 and Linux can be booted entirely from a floppy. QSSL used to distribute a floppy with a kernel, GUI, PPP, and web browser on it. Just plug in, boot up, and start surfing. I’ve also heard of Linux-based products that fit entirely on one floppy. One is a network router (check out http://www2.linuxrouter.org:81 for details).

I’ve gotten QNX 4 to boot and run a Photon application with only 8 meg of Flash memory and 8 meg of RAM. I’m sure it can be done with less. I expect that QNX 6 can also be squeezed into a small amount of disk, although I haven’t worked with it myself.

PS- If you want something really exotic, check out PicoBSD or the Oberon OS at:

The QNX4 demodisk is still available at www.qnx.com/demodisk
