Tape Drive for Qnx4 Question.

I was looking at a 20gb Seagate Hornet scsi tape drive for Qnx4.
Has anyone used this drive on Qnx4. Was looking on the web site
for supported devices but did not see much on tape drives.
It seemed like a well rounded drive that should work ok on Qnx4.

Hi Bob

I have not used this tape drive. I haven’t used tape for a number of years.
But, . . .

I think that QNX4’s Fsys stil has a problem writing out more than 2GB to a
single file, even on tape. What you can do is:
rewind tape
write a file < 2 GB
write a file mark
write a file < 2 GB
write a file mark
lather, rinse, repeat (get it)

Then if you want to restore the 4 tape file just rewind and forward the tape
3 times before you start the restore.

If the drive is SCSI it should otherwise work. But I can guarantee it. If
you haven’t purchased the drive yet, make the vendor offer a refund if it
won’t work for you, most will.

Make sure that it matches you card in cable width and speed. Use real good
cables. Make sure that the card is properely terminated, don’t trust
auto-terminate. They don’t work more often than they work.

Hello,

rewind tape
write a file < 2 GB
write a file mark
write a file < 2 GB
write a file mark

What are the symptoms of this?
If I issue the following command

pax -wvt /dev/tp0 /database

and the /database directory contains more than 2GB of files - what will
happen ?

Then if you want to restore the 4 tape file just rewind and forward the
tape
3 times before you start the restore.

Not sure what you mean here. Do you mean to restore the 4th file on the
tape?
If you want to restore them all - can you just restore from the tape

pax -rvt /dev/tpr0

or do you have to restore 4 times

tape bot

pax -rvt /dev/tpr0

tape forward

pax -rvt /dev/tpr0

Someone from QSSL will have to reply about writing out more than 2 GB. But I
don’t think you’re in luck.

On the tape, each write session, that is seperated by a file mark, is called
a “file” (I think). I realized that these files are actually archives that
represent several real files.

Hum I always though tape were block devices.
