You should be able to use them as read device, but you can’t use them to
write. DVD-RAM however should work.
We use DVD RAM from Toshiba with QNX6.2.
Yust now there is a new model Panasonic LF-D321E which is able to read/write
DVD-RAM and also write once DVD-R media. I hope there should be no problem
with DVD-RAM but should we be able to sequentially burn a raw image to
DVD-R.
Just quite suitable feature for our project of audio and video loggers.

Those Panasonic drives are also much faster when you use DVD-RAM in ‘floppy
mode’ (i.e., have filesystem on it and write files individually) due to much
better seek time spec (about 70ms) than any other DVD-RAM on the market. The
catch apparently is that to achieve this spec they used lot of plastic in
the mechanics to make it lighter. So it has shorter MTBF rating and may not
last as long as Toshiba…
OTOH, Toshiba IDE model has brain-dead loading mechanism (IMHO) that exposes
the media on every load/eject (normally DVD-RAM media is only exposed when
already in the drive) so the dust will get into the cartridge inevitably. It
also has a nasty habit of sucking the ejected tray in on reset which
interferes with the way we use it. The Panasonic does not have any of those
problems (nor did the discontinued SCSI Toshiba model).
