Net.ether drivers

Could someone please tell me how to determine if the version of
Net.ether9000 driver that I’m using is the most up to date. I’m
interrested in the version for QNX4.24 OS. At present the version I’m
using is 4.24D dated Apr 12 1999. Has there been an update to this
driver? In the future how would I find out if the version has been
updated?

Thanks
John

Well, the current released version of the QNX os is 4.25 with
a D patch. The best thing to do is read the ‘changes’ file for the
current release, which you can see in the /updates/qnx42/Released
directory on quics or through the web.

I can tell you that you are not running the latest driver. There have
been a few modifications to the driver since 4.24.

Thanks,
Heather

Thanks for the information Heather.

However, our present product is still running QNX4.24, we are up grading
new product to QNX4.25. I guess what I’m asking is whether there has been
any update to the Net.ether9000 that I should be useing on the QNX4.24
systems products? Is it safe to put the QNX4.25 Net.ether9000 driver with a
QNX4.24 system? Doesn’t the driver get built with the OS that it is part
of, i.e. a drive that is for the QNX4.24 system was built with that system
and therefore may cause a problem if used with a different OS?

By the way, in most of the QNX documentation the OS is denoted as a
QNX4.24/QNX4.25 and so on. How or where does one determine the patch level
of the OS you have? How do you determine if the patch level you have is the
most upto date version of OS there is? How is the patch level related to
documentation? Also, how do you tie in the other parts of the OS (drives
like Proc32, Slib32, Dev32, Pipe and so on ) to a particular release of OS?

Hope that you can help me answer these questions so that I can pass this
information on to others in my company. I’m not the only on asking these
questions.

Thanks again for your help. Talk with you soon.

If I can run the latest Net drivers with 4.24, could someone in QNX land tell me
how to determine the correct set of Net drives?

For example;
My present Net.ether9000 is dated: Apr 12 1999 (/bin/Net.ether9000)
My present Net is dated: Jul 31 1997 (/bin/Net)
My present netinfo is dated: Aug 22 1997 (/bin/netinfo)

IS THIS THE CORRECT SET?

Will this set of drivers work together correctly? If not, what is the correct
set when using the Net.ether9000 dated Apr 12, 1999 driver? And how do I get a
copy of the set.

Hello John,

There is a file on your system called /etc/modules/qnx424 which lists all of
the modules included in the QNX4.24 install:

4135967635 31Jul97 /bin/Net OS NET
310714985 27Mar97 /bin/Net.ether9000 OS NET
3194979707 22Aug97 /bin/netinfo OS NET

From the /etc/modules/qnx425 if installed you will see:

310714985 27Mar97 /bin/Net.ether9000 4671 4673

so the Net.ether9000 was not changed from 4.24 to 4.25

To find out which patches have been installed, check the /etc/version/qnx
file which on my system is:
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.24, release date 05-Sept-97
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25, release date 13-Nov-98
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch A, release date 14-Dec-98
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch B, beta date 26-Feb-99
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch C, beta date 30-Sep-99

The beta dates are actually the release dates…

So then you would look at the /updates/qnx42/Released/ directory on QUICS
and “grep -ie Net.ether9000 *.changes” produces:

qnx425toqnx425B.changes:/bin/Net.ether9000
qnx425toqnx425C.changes:/bin/Net.ether9000
qnx425toqnx425D.changes: /bin/Net.ether9000 - Now works properly with the
91C96 chipset
qnx425toqnx425D.changes: Net.ether9000 Changed driver to work with
91c100 fiber adapter.

Considering the date on the Net.ether9000 is Apr 12 1999, and there was an
update of the driver in patch C, you are most likely using the Net.ether9000
from 4.25C.

melt < /updates/qnx42/Released/qnx425C.tar.F | tar -tv 2> /tmp/425C.txt
grep -ie Net.ether9000 /tmp/425C.txt reveals:

rwxrwxr-x 0/120 44117 Apr 12 08:55 1999 /bin/Net.ether9000

A little bit of work, but…

Hello John,

There is a file on your system called /etc/modules/qnx424 which lists all of

4135967635 31Jul97 /bin/Net OS NET
310714985 27Mar97 /bin/Net.ether9000 OS NET
3194979707 22Aug97 /bin/netinfo OS NET

From the /etc/modules/qnx425 if installed you will see:

310714985 27Mar97 /bin/Net.ether9000 4671 4673

so the Net.ether9000 was not changed from 4.24 to 4.25

To find out which patches have been installed, check the /etc/version/qnx
file which on my system is:
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.24, release date 05-Sept-97
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25, release date 13-Nov-98
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch A, release date 14-Dec-98
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch B, beta date 26-Feb-99
QNX Software Systems Ltd. QNX 4.25 Patch C, beta date 30-Sep-99

The beta dates are actually the release dates…

So then you would look at the /updates/qnx42/Released/ directory on QUICS
and “grep -ie Net.ether9000 *.changes” produces:

qnx425toqnx425B.changes:/bin/Net.ether9000
qnx425toqnx425C.changes:/bin/Net.ether9000
qnx425toqnx425D.changes: /bin/Net.ether9000 - Now works properly with the
