can't login as root after installing 4.25-D patch

I have downloaded and installed QNX4.25-D patch. During the installtion,
I have selected the “Security Patch”. The installation went trouble free,
but after re-booting the system I can’t login as ‘root’ anymore. What do
I do now ?

Do you have another QNX system where you could prepare a boot floppy to use
on the other system?
Boot the floppy, mount the Hard Drive, then go in and repair it.
If you edit /etc/passwd you can remove the x on the root entry and disable
its passwd.
Your floppy will need to have a root login and appropriate utilities.
If interested and you have another system I have a script that creates such
a floppy.

Using the QNX4 rescue floppy, I was able to recover from this situation
at some extent. I changed /etc/passwd to remove the “*” (to indicate that
the password is not needed), then alt-boot (by hitting ESC during the boot)
into the QNX4.25-D box as ‘root’, an ran ‘passwd’ to set a new passwd. Now
I can alt-boot into the box with this password.

However, my normal boot procedure is to go through the Photon’s graphical
login. Well, this doesn’t work, i.e. the same password accepted during
the alt-boot, is rejected by Photon’s login. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

Did you install the security patch for Photon 1.14? If not install it.

This will allow you to login using the new password you have set.

If not, email mshane@qnx.com immediately.

The security patch changes the encrypted passwords (in /etc/shadow) and
installs a different encryption algorithm.
You’ll have to install the Photon security patches, too.
(And, if you have the Watcom C/C++ compiler and/or TCP/IP installed, you’ll
also need to install those security patches).

Thanks for your help, Anders. The snag is that it looks like I have
installed everything that is included in that 4.25-D patch. The Photon’s
Installer shows all of them - Photon, TCP/IP and Watcom compiler - in
green color (“already installed”). On the other hand, I am definitely
having the problem with TCP/IP as well - for instance, I cannot FTP to
the localhost anymore (root is commented out in /etc/ftpusers). To my
suprise, the Telnet does accept the password and let me through. I guess
I do need to get these security patched from somewhere and install them.
Any suggestion where I can get all these security patches from ?
