Can't login to Photon anymore

After I have installed the 4.25-D patch, I can’t login directly to Photon
anymore as ‘root’. I know that the password is correct because I can
alt-boot with it (by pressing the ESC during the boot) with no problems.
I also can boot into Photon if I set the password to the null string (i.e
just hit ENTER at passwd’s prompts). By if I set password to anything
different from the null string, the Photon login won’t let me in. I
tried all sorts of passwords (“111”, “root” etc.), but no luck.

I should say that the 4.25-D patch caused a lot of troubles at my site.
After I downloaded it from the QNX’s website and installed it, I was
unable to boot into my QNX box at all. I had to resort to using the
QNX rescue floppy in order to boot the system and restore the root’s
password.

The problem might be in /etc/config/kbd/ru_RU_102.kbd. Patch D
replaces it with a common one which turns Russian mode on by default,
so if you had “KBD=ru_RU_102” set, installing patch D would switch you
into Russian mode upon Photon startup. Just a guess.

It’s a common practice to rebuild the boot image after installing a
patch. Did you try this?

Thanks for helping out, Nikolai. It turned out that the missing Photon
security patch was causing all that trouble. After I downloaded and
installed the missing Photon, TCP/IP runtime and Watcom 10.6 security
patches (updates/qnx42/Released/Security), the problem went away.
