ppp chap question

is it possible to give name and password for a remote session on the commandline to pppd instead of using the chap-secrets file? Or maybe use a private chap-secrets file?
Reason i want that is, my application offers dial-up connection to different sites. The user should enter name and password. I dont’ really want to modify the chap-secrets file which is used for incoming connections as well. It would be difficult to handle multiple dial-up sessions with one chap-secrets anyway.

I’ve set up an account called pppd, only when you login in to it pppd is started.

You could have multiple pppd logins… john_pppd fred_pppd
to support secret passwords for multiple users.
All of these logins could be set to use the same directory in /etc/passwd.

See attached .profile used in the pppd account
(Note: use specific logout at end of script otherwise pppd link sometimes holds modem line busy.)
