After update of a system (from June 2000 CD) with the March 2001 or May 2001

I can’t login on accounts with passwords.
Even after redefinition of the passwords by the passwd command
id doesn’t let me in.
A complete reinstallation of the system works, but I don’t think, this is a
real solution.

If this is the same update as the latest QNX425E patch, then I had the
same problem. Apparently a previous /bin/login was reinstalled by that
patch. This uses the old crypt algorithm. Overwriting /bin/login whit
the correct version cured the problem for me.

We had the same problem also with an older version after we had
installed the QNX security patch that includes an upgraded version of
both login and passwd. Unfortunately qnx425E patch does not include
security changes, it restores the old version of login, due to an older
update, but leaves the current version of passwd. The result is that
passwd and login are using a different algoritm for password encryption.
It is a real mine.
The system can be recovered without reinstalling by means of using the
standard boot floppy and step by step activating the correct disk driver
and mounting the filesystem on any mount point but root. At that time we
found that the faster operation is to delete the file /??/etc/shadow
before rebooting.
