Patch E login problem.

I recently installed the qnx425patchE.tar file.

After installing I tried to login and it wouldn’t let me.
I edited the passwd file and removed the passwords thinking that the
passwords had somehow become corrupted during the installation.
I logged in and set my passwords to what they had been prior to
installation.
Rebooted and once again it would not let me login if the username has a
password.

Anyone run in to this?

Anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks in Advance

Dan

There is a security patch that must be installed before Patch E. The Patch
E install should have warned you about that.

For now, maybe you can boot from a floppy and either install the security
patch or rename and rebuild your /etc/passwd and shadow files.

I did have the QNX Security Patch installed, but for some reason the problem
was still there.

Based on your E-mail I figured I’d try re-installing it. So I uninstalled it
and then re-installed it off my June 2000 cd and now it seems to be working
fine. Only hitch was that my users got deleted but I only had a couple of
users per machine so it wasn’t too big a problem.

Thanks for the response.

I kind of agree that that security patch issues wasn’t done very gracefully.
I’ve had to go through the same things that you did.

My guess what happened is:

when you installed security, it changed the password encryption format,
AND the “login” program that understands this new encryption.
then you installed patch E, which restores to the old “login” that only
understands the original encyption. Of course, you can’t login now
because “login” doesn’t understand your new password (shadow).
I bet if you install the security patch again, and get the new “login”,
it will start working again.

I hope you meant that your user accounts were deleted. Having your
users deleted is quite serious

Good one Rennie. That hit my funny bone just right. I couldn’t breath for
about two minutes I was laughing so hard.

sudden he was deleted.”
