lpd troubles

I am running QNX 4.25 with TCP/IP 4.25.
When I attemp to run lpd it immediately exits with no error messages.
My /etc/printcap file looks like this:

lp|default line printer:
:lp=:rm=laser_09:rp=lp:sd=/usr/spool/laser_09:

where laser_09 exists in my /etc/hosts file mapped to IP address
10.1.0.173 and refers to a network printer on an WinNT network.

What am I doing wrong?

TIA,

Are there errors reported on /dev/con1 or the syslog file?

Stab in the dark - does /usr/spool/laser_09 exist?

My syslog file is empty and /usr/spool/laser_09 exists with mode set to
777. It seems odd that lpd would just exit without any stderr or stdout.
Just in case it matters, the version reported for Socket by sin ver is
4.25C.

What about /usr/spool/output. I have found in the past that this directory
is required.

There was no /usr/spool/output. I added that directory and no lpd seems to
stay running! Now to find out if I can get the printing to work. In the
meantime, thanks!

It’s strange your syslog file is empty, if syslogd is running, there should
be messages inside it stating that syslogd was started/restarted etc.

Is syslogd running?
