Network card semi working

Hello,
This one machine I have, the network card isn’t working all the time. I’ve
narrowed it down to the PCI slot. The card works fine in the last PCI slot,
but when I put it in the one above it, it doesn’t work. What I mean by it
doesn’t work is, show_pci shows that it is there, the network drivers find
it OK, but it cannot get an IP address (via DHCP). If I manually set the IP
(ifconfig) to work within my network, and try to ping another machine, it is
not able to.

Anybody have any idea why this might happen? It could be as simple as a bad
PCI slot, but it confuses me that most of it works except that one part.

TIA,
Ron

It is possible that the BIOS assigns different interupt ,base Mem and I/O prorts
when the card is in the second slot. These may be conflicting with something
else on the system.

That’s what I was thinking (haven’t really researched that part of it
properly yet). Thing is, I have copies of the same system, and all others
work fine.

I’ll have to fiddle with it a bit

Hi Ron,

I have seen this on one of my systems at home (running Windows). To be
totally honest I have no idea why this happens. Some cards for some reason
just don’t work in some slots. I am sure there is a reasonable explination,
I just haven’t heard it yet :frowning:

It might be an interupt problem. When you change PCI slots you usually
get a different interupt.

I’ve seen this many times.
It’s the PNP BIOS assigning IRQ’s to the slot positions.
It’s some-what configurable in the BIOS.
