Are there any system diagnostics tools that warn when system resources
get to an unacceptable level?
Something that would automate what I currently am doing by hand?

Hm… I don’t think so. You might take a look at osinfo & sysmon
(downloadable) for code that tracks many resources, then add your
own hooks for generating a warning.
