Demo Disk Installation Problems

I am trying your demo disk, and am unable to get it to work on two different
Intel clone boxes. I downloaded it yesterday from your website at
http://www.qnx.com/demodisk/download/network.html , and followed the
instructions to create a bootable floppy on a new, freshly formatted floppy.

Box 1 is an AMD Athlon 900, 128MB RAM, 10 gig hard drive, running AMD Ultra
100 Bios v.6.0.

Box 1, booted off of floppy drive, saw splash screen, hit space bar,
selected F1 for North America, selected NIC card (there are 2 NICs in this
box). Received error message:
net_init: qnx_hint_attach, tulip_IrqHdlr
Send():Register with Net Manager failed.

Version: 424.G Aug 25, 1997 Technical Support: +1 (613) 591-0941

(pid=17, ‘//1/bin/Net’)

eax/0 ebx/10180 ecx/1d edx/2d00 esi/0 edi/0 edp/10e30/
Stack (f8:14c4)
…followed by dump

I thought I’d try a different box.

I downloaded the demo again, and created a demo floppy on a different
computer, using a different brand new, newly formatted diskette.

Box 2 is a Pentium II MMX, 64 MB RAM, 2.5 gig hard drive, running Award Bios
v.4.51PG

Box 2, booted off of floppy drive, saw splash screen, hit space bar,
selected F1 for North America (no NIC cards in this box).
Displays:
QNX Demodisk Loader v.1.5
100%

Box locked completely at this point - Ctrl - Alt - Del didn’t work, had to
use power button

After power off and disk spindown, restarted. Booted off the floppy, but
didn’t receive the splash screen, but went straight to error message:
Version:0. Aug 25 1997 Technical Support: +1 (613) 591-0941
Kernel fault ldt 100 fault et0
(pid=1, ‘…/disk-COMMON/boot/Proc32’)
cs:eip=f0:3647 ss:esp=f8:1504 efl=12246 ds=f8 es=f8 fs=f8 gs=0
eax/934 ebx/29 ecx/1000 edx/1 esi/3fd7007 edi/3e7e ebp/f7c00f8
Stack(f8:14c8)
…followed by a dump

Since I’m trying this on a test box, I attempted to eliminate any potential
interference from any existing operating system on the hard drive by
fdisking and formatting the hard drive using a Win95 system disk.

On rebooting Box 2 off of the floppy, the splash screen appeared, hit the
spacebar, F1 for North America
Then the computer reboots itself.
Tried it again, the splash screen appeared, hit the spacebar, F1 for North
America

Screen turns blue; appends:

Progress Indicator[\ ]

Then I get a white letter on black background error message:
Version 424.g Aug25 1997 Technical Support: +1 (613) 591-0941
Kernel fault ldt0 fault e+0
cs:eip=f09a8 ss:esp=f8:1510 efl=12046 ds=f8 es=0 fs=0 gs=0
eax/ffffff0z ebx/39bc ecx/d0000 edx/0 esi/80000 edi/4a5cd ebp/10d04
Stack(f8:14d4)
…followed by a dump

Any suggestions on what I can do to make this demo diskette boot on these
machines?

Yes, but we have a need for QNX 4, so any information you can provide would
be most helpful.

If you want a real demo get in touch with QNX to try to get
an eval copy of QNX4.

The problem with the floppy demo is that you can’t really
customize stuff to fit the perticular of your hardware. It
tries to be smart about auto detecting hardware but there
is only so much it can do.
