Hello!
I’ve installed QNX 4.25E on PC with Adaptec 29160N.
The installation finished but after the reboot I got
Missing Operating System

The only thing I see is that .boot is 589016 bytes long.

Help please.
Vladimir

Hello!
I’ve installed QNX 4.25E on PC with Adaptec 29160N.
The installation finished but after the reboot I got
Missing Operating System

Did you install the loader (look at fdisk) and you must
have set a bootable partition.

The only thing I see is that .boot is 589016 bytes long.

I don’t think that’s the problem.

Help please.
Vladimir

During installation from CD (may 2001) the installer have made the
partition bootable. the line in fdisk ends with
… * MAYBE
I’ve manually repeated this in fdisk and got the same result.

That’s odd, it’s as though the BIOS can’t find the primary boot loader.

I’ve manually repeated this in fdisk and got the same result.

You said you are using a SCSI setup right?
Some SCSI cards have an option in their BIOS to
enable/disable boot device, Make sure it’s enable.

You might also try toggling the “>1GB” support option in the card’s
configuration setup.

Long term, the “MAYBE” may be risky. It means the partition has >1024
cylinders. If you should fill or heavily fragment the disk and then
rewrite the boot image, it may land beyond the 1023 limit.

It’s only QNX and TCP on the disk installed - so it can’t be
“heavily fragment”. All otions on 29160N are enabled? but the problem
is still there.

Did the limitation of boot image < 512KB eliminated?

Hi Vladimir,
I don’t think you have problem with .boot file. You mentioned
“Missing Operating System”
error message. It is a message from primary boot loader (loader in master boot record), not from
secondary boot loader (loader in boot sector of partition). The secondary boot loader only works
with boot image (.boot file). In other words, primary boot loader can not find boot sector (0x55aa
signature at least) of QNX partition. I would to boot from floppy in order to check out the
integrity of QNX partition and check the boot sector. I should be hiden in my corner if boot
process of QNX4 is quite different from QNX6 thought

Best regards.
Eduard.

Is the machine BIOS set to boot from SCSI, versus IDE. Have you try
installing a different operating system. I’m guessing you’ll have the same
problem.

I don’t think your QNX boot sector has no signature at end of sector, I guess primary loader looks
for presence of secondary loader at 0x3e offset in the sector. If you have 0xF6 from 0x3E till end
of sector, it means you have no secondary loader (fail of ‘dinit’ in QNXRTP, or ‘sys’ in DOS, dont
know what in QNX4).
Eduard.

If the boot sequence in BIOS is set IDE,SCSI it boots from
IDE; when SCSI,IDE - Missing Operating System.

Can
Fsys.aha8scsi fsys -h 255 …
affect the problem?

Sorry, at this moment I dont understand did you install on IDE partition or on SCSI partition. If
you did on IDE partition why you think your partition on SCSI drive should be bootable?

Thanks for everyone!!!

WE DID IT !!!

I did all from the beginning, told Fsys.aha8scsi that drive have 255 heads
and everithing is O’K now.
