ping name resolution problem

Running QNX 4.25 & TCP/IP v5.0 with ‘named’ running.

If I try to:
ping hostname.com
where hostname is an outside name (i.e. not part of my own net) I get
ping: unknown host hostname.com

But if I try
nslookup hostname.com
the name resolution works just fine.

How do I get ping to use named for name resolution?

I have tried a number of hosts for hostname.com with and without a trailing
period.

Is there a solution for this?

BTW, the system running named is also my gateway to the outside world. All
systems on my inside net do correctly use the named host to resolve names
(from ping), both internal and external.

For the record, ftp and telnet both DO NOT recognize host names from the
outside world. But Voyager does and nslookup does.
