NIC for 4.25?

I’ve reviewed the sipported hardware page on QSSL’s web site, but I’m
unable to find a 100MB/sec PCI ethernet card to purchase that is on the
“approved” list. The last cards we purchased were 3Com905C-TX-M, but they
are no longer available. This card was replaced with 3Com905CX-TX-M and
we can only get it to run at 10MB/sec. Now I’m stuck trying to find
another card that will work with 4.25.

Anybody aware of a 100MB PCI ethernet card that can be purchased and works
with 4.25?

Thanks,
Tony

Doesn’t Corman Technologies still make 100 Mbps cards with QNX 4
drivers?

Bill, thanks for the URL. I’ll contact them to see if this card is still
available. It is getting rather difficult to find cards compatible with
QNX 4.

I haven’t worked with Corman (as a customer) for a number of years.
But they are a very pleasant company to work with. They give great
QNX networking tech support.

We have no trouble getting 905C cards that work, but any cards with the

8139 chipset (Net.rtl) we have tried work, as do the Intel 82557/8 cards.

The new 905 cards work fine under QNX4. What version of the driver are you
running?

The new 905 cards with 4.25E (Net.ether905 → 4.24K) only ran at 10MB/sec.
I had an earlier version of the 4.25G (Net.ether905 → 4.24N) release and
we just found the card runs at 100MB/sec with the newer driver. I saw
where QSSL recalled 4.25G after the version I downloaded, but maybe a
newer version 4.25G is now available.

Thanks,
Tony

I have 3x905 cards in my machine running the 424N version of the driver,

Are you using any command line options to the driver at startup?

Thanks,
Tony

This is not the same 424N driver that I have. The file I have is dated
Jul 02 2002 and the size is 50310. I got this file from downloading a
beta version of 4.25G Jan 7 this year. The nice thing with this version
is that it was still in the tar.F format and I could use /etc/install to
unpack it.

I just downloaded the newest 4.25G from QSSL and it is in a tarx format.
This format is not something I’m familiar with. Seems very odd to me that
QSSL would change the format of the updates this long after QNX4 was
released. Did QSSL assume all of the QNX 4 users have this CD installer?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Tony,

The change to tarx was done for all released version archives for QNX4 back
in (1999-2000).
All user with the QNX4 upgrade CD (June2000) will have phinstall. If you do
not have this CD contact your QNX sales rep.

Note: You do not need to be running photon to use the installer, simply
start phinstall from the command line (i.e. /cd0/bin/phinstall)

Regards,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply. I found our upgrade CD and will give phinstall a
try. This format change is going to create problems for me since I don’t
have a CD-ROM in most of the computers I’m supporting. I’m assuming once
I install on a computer using phinstall that I can archive that
information to a tar.F format,so I can upgrade other computers using
/etc/install like I did before. Is this true, or something that is no
longer allowed?

Thanks,
Tony

Yes you can. I’ve done it.

If you read through the /etc/install script you can get an idea of how
it works.

the few tricks are:

  1. put a file first in the .tar.F archive called /dev/tty and it will
display that as an install message on the screen.
  2. put a file called ‘/tmp/setup’ (I think) in the archive and it will
execute it when it is done extracting the archive.

Good luck.

Oh! And very important. Install skips the first sector on the floppy
for QNX licenses. So use vol. As in:
pax -vw < $UPDATE_FILES | freeze | vol -ws2 /dev/fd0

Thanks for the info Bill! I tried running the phinstall program from a
text console, but was not able to install patch G. Once phinstall was
running I did File->Source and selected the tarx file I downloaded from
QSSL. These are the steps I got from the QSSL web site. After selecting
the qnx-4.25-01G.tarx file, I was taken back to the initial screen where I
started without installing the patch and gave me no errors. I ran
phinstall from the June 2000 CD that was sent to me.

This sure is easier than using the old /etc/install script…

Has anyone seen this type of installation problem or have any suggestions
what might be going with phinstall?

  • Tony

Hi Tony,

I just tried it out here and had no problems. After selecting the tarx file,
it will run a scan of the archive and populate a list products. To the left
of the product name there will be an icon the displays the product status
(see top right corner for a legend). The first product in the list should be
“QNX 4.25 Operating system”, the icon should show up as a green box outlined
with a black line. This signifies it is an installed product with updates
available for install. Expand the product by clicking of the cross-hairs to
the left of the green box. This will show you the patch levels available for
install. Select the patch G radio button and click on the start button at
the bottom left of the screen.

Regards,

Joe

All PCI cards based on Realtek 8139 or Intel 82557 chipsets works fine for
me under QNX 4.25G.
