License problem on 4.23 to 4.25 upgrade

Hello,

I’m rebuilding a QNX4 machine after it’s hard drive failed.

I install 4.23 OS and 4.23 TCPRT from the original install floppies.
Everything works.

I install upgrades from QUICS:
qnx425.upgrade.tar.F
tcprt.425.upgrade.tar.F
qnx425a.tcprt.tar.F
qnx425b.tcprt.tar.F
qnx425c.tcprt.tar.F
(I may have the filenames wrong here, but I hope you get what I mean)

Now, I get “Socket: no license”. Reinstalling the 4.23 license doesn’t
help.

I searched newsgroups, and there were some references to nameloc. I tried
adding nameloc, deleting nameloc, pausing after starting nameloc, etc.
Still, “no license”.

Has anyone seen this? How did you fix it?

Thanks,
Paul

I have this problem too, in my sysinit.1 I put a “sleep 3” before starting
Socklet (but it still happens sometimes)

What licenses do you have on the system?
‘licinfo -a’ should tell you.

What type of licenses do you have and how did you install them? Are they in
the directory /etc/licenses, or in the file /.licenses or a combination?

There was a change in the licensing between QNX 4.23, and QNX 4.23A, but
since 4.23 A nothing has changed (that I can remember). If you are trying
to use 4.23 licenses with a 4.25 OS this could be your problem, if my memory
is correct we replaced all 4.23 licenses that were shipped when w erelease
4.23A so there should be any left out there.

That sounds like my problem. When I first built this machine (years ago),
I remember getting our 4.23 disks, and soon afterwards getting 4.23A disks.
I just reinstalled using the 4.23 license. I’ll have to dig through our
file cabinets and find the 4.23A disks.

So, if I apply the 4.23A update, and install the 4.23A license, I should
then be able to go straight to the 4.25 update (or do I have to install
4.24 before 4.25)?

If you have to re-install from scratch the closer you start to your eventual
goal the better. So if you intend to get right up-to-date with all the
products you are using check and see what updates are available. It would be
best for you to get a update CD and do your full install starting with 4.25.
Whichever way you choose to do this, you’ll need to use the right licenses.
The “right” licenses are any licenses other than 4.23. So earlier licenses
from /etc/licenses are OK, and later licenses that come on certificates are
OK too.

Do you have a old QUICS userid and passwd? If so you can find an archive to
make a full disk set for 4.25 at this address:
http://upd.qnx.com:8000/cgi-ubin/up_gen_page?/updates_aliased/qnx42/Released
/qnx425
If you don’t have access I could send you the archive as an email
attachment. I’d still recommend the CD as the best route though.

If you decide to continue on the path the you are currently on (update one
version at a time until you get to the latest) you’ll need to check the old
QUICS updates for archives and details on what is/isn’t recommenede. I
can’t remmeber all the details, although I do remember the release notes
detailing which update paths worked and which updates weren’t recommended so
would require a full install.

Agreed.

Also, I would add that if you need to apply several/many upgrades,
don’t waste a minute configuring anything until your all done (except
as necessary). The necessary configurations have changed over the
years and some of the changes are not automatically updated to the
newer required formats.

When you have all of the software that you desire/require installed
then start your configuring and customizing.
