Hi all!

I am new with UNIX-like systems, and thus cannot find all things needed…
sorry if these are FAQs…

first, why doesn’t man work for most of the commands? (using an
out-of-the-box installation)

second, my graphic card is not detected… it’s a Riva TNT, so it should be
supported. Do I have to tweak manually the /etc/system/config/* stuff? seems
like a tough job…
if I start the driver manually, there is no change - except that QNX
will not boot anymore…

third, is there any overview of this driver configuration stuff? all I found
is some man pages, but for example nothing about /etc/system/config/*
(except here on the forum)…

please let me know what info is needed, and I will post it when I get home

thanks in advance
Vlad

I get the same problem on my TNT too. crttrap trap displays
a alloc mem failed error message. This seems to be
a genuine bug.

Hello Vlad,

hang in there. once you come to grips with the structural concepts, Unix
like operating systems are far more flexible than Windows. I too come from
a primarily Windows oriented background, and after feeling rather lost for a
long time inside Linux, it has started to come together. Much of the Linux
knowledge and concepts is translatable to QNX.

I believe that man doesn’t work because the help viewer contains all the
documentation in HTML format. If you can’t find the documentation in the
help viewer then examine the duplicate documentation on the QNX site.

Unless you are really averse to learning about the gritty insides of qnx,
trying to diagnose and fix your video card problem is probably a good place
to start learning. You never learn quicker than when you have a problem to
solve. A good place to start is to read through the “utilities”
documentation in the help viewer and read the functional summary of each of
the utilities. You’ll find one there called crttrap (i think), which
detects and starts up your video card. Use the pidin or ps commands to have
a look at what processes are running on your system. One of these processes
will be the video card driver and you can also see the command line
parameters that it was launched with, which should help you to understand
and diagnose the problems with your card. I’m using a tnt2 in my machine
and it works fine.

cheers

andrew

Can you post the following info:

  1. The output of: pci -v
  2. The output of: /usr/photon/bin/show_vesa
  3. The contents of: /etc/system/config/graphics-traplist
  4. The contents of: /etc/system/config/graphics-modelist

Here comes the data… One note: when running “crttrap trap”, it says

devgt-iographics -dldevg-tnt.so -I0 -d0x10de,0x0020
Alloc mem failed
mode switcher init: Invalid argument

I am appreciating any help! thanks

Hi all!

I am new with UNIX-like systems, and thus cannot find all things needed…
sorry if these are FAQs…

first, why doesn’t man work for most of the commands? (using an
out-of-the-box installation)

In QNX it is ‘use’.

second, my graphic card is not detected… it’s a Riva TNT, so it should be

In QNX it is ‘use’.

But ‘man’ exists too… it works at least for ‘man man’

why the difference?

Vlad

‘man’ is a viewer for manpages. They are stored in a group of
directories reserved for that purpose. ‘use’ extracts data from the
program file itself. The data displayed by ‘use’ can be embedded into
files by using another utility. For details, try use use (I think?)

‘man’ will not work for the standard applications distributed with QNX
unless someone writes the ‘man’ pages and puts them onto the file
system themselves. ‘use’ data is already embedded into most of these
files. However, cross-platform software generally would not have the
‘use’ data embedded into them. You could either embed it yourself (in
which case you already know how to use the software, ne?), or simply
use the port of ‘man’ to view the manpages which are installed by
default for many unices.

So use ‘use’ when necessary and ‘man’ when necessary. Or, if you use
‘use’ exclusively, symlink it so you can call it as ‘man’ if you like
(but I wouldn’t, since they aren’t the same at all).

usemsg is the utility for embedding use messages in a program.
They can also be included in scripts – take a look at the ph script
for an example of putting a use message in a script.
