Sony VAIO F580,

Hi,

We have a Sony VAIO F580 laptop. I installed QNX RTP, and it recognized the
video card just fine. However, the audio, CD-ROM drive, and network card
were not found. I can do something about the network card if necessary:
it’s a 3Com 3CCFE574BT (PCMCIA).

The CD-ROM drive is actually a DVD-ROM drive, and I don’t have manufacturers
or model numbers for the DVD-ROM drive or the audio.

Is work planned or being done to support the DVD-ROM drive and/or the audio?

Sony is usually very weird hardware. I just tried to install RTP on
Compaq Presario 1800 and surprizingly, everything worked - video (ATI
Rage), sound (ESS Solo) and network (Intel). Just thought someone might
be interested to know…

That’s good to know. I’ve got a Compaq Presario 1690 I’m hoping to try it

Hi Shawn,

I can address your audio card problems, I think.
The only Sony VAIO that I have worked with had a
Yamaha YMF744 audio chip in it. You can verify
that yours has the same chipset using the pci command:
/usr/sbin/pci -vvv | less
You must run pci as root. If you scroll down the list
looking for “Audio” you should find an entry that
describes your hardware. If Yamaha is the vendor then
you have the same chipset. This chipset was not supported
by the ALSA GPL drivers that we released with RtP in
September. When the new non-GPL drivers are released
the Yamaha PCI chipsets (YMF724 and YMF744) will be supported
in the first batch.

One interesting aside, when you do get the new drivers you
will have to go into the laptop’s BIOS and disable the “PnP OS”
option, or the driver will not function correctly.

I do in fact have the Yamaha YMF744 audio chip. So, I’ll have to wait on
that.

The DVD-ROM drive is able to read CDs now. There must have been something
funky going on the first time I booted RTP, but I was able to install the
rest of the software from the CD using the package manager.

I have one final problem: networking. I took a trip to CompUSA the other
day with the supported hardware list in hand, and the only PCMCIA network
card on the shelf that was also on the list was the Linksys EC2T, so I got
it. But it doesn’t seem to work. Attached are my “pci -vvv” and “pin cis”
output files.

Try the following as well. Go into the BIOS setup and re-assign IRQ5 to the
IRDA port. Reboot the machine and your network should work. For some reason
IRQ5 does not work on these machines.

and it is identical. If you start io-net and plug the machine into an
active network, what does nicinfo show? Please post the output from

a few seconds, then ‘slay devp-pccard’ and post the output ‘file’.
