So what exactly are the minimum requirements to install QNX RTP?
I downloaded the image and created the CD and used that to create
the boot floppy. Anyhow, I was under the impression it was capable
of working in a pretty resource limited environment. I guess I
should have been concerned when I saw in the readme about needing
600MB of hard drive space.
Question 1: minimum system requirements
So first I tried installing it on an old 486 system I have, 8MB
of RAM and a 250MB hard drive. It copied stuff off the CD OK
(with various messages about not being able to detect PCI stuff,
which since there isn’t any it’s OK) and then when it started to
boot it tried to create a 128MB swapfile which it said was going
to take 256MB of disk space! Somewhere in there there was an error
about running out of memory. Then it got to a point where it sounded
like it was trying to do something with a graphics driver or Photon
and just hung at that line.
[ skip a couple of paragraphs if you’re tired of my 486 woes and
want to read about problems when I tried it on another more
powerful system of mine ]
So with the 486, I tried another install. This time after the
CD and floppy were removed, I booted into safe mode (or whatever
it’s called) and created my own swapfile (first I tried 48MB and
later 80MB). Both times it still basically got back to the same
point and hung, though both these times there were no other
complaints about memory on the way there.
So the $100 question is, what is the minimum amount of RAM and
disk space and install requires? Or am I having some other
problem with the install? If someone thinks it’s some other
problem, what should be my next step?
Question 2: SCSI?
So I went ahead and tried to install it on another machine I
have. Pentium Pro 200MHz, 128MB RAM, Adaptec AHA-2940UW
controller with no IDE devices and 1GB open free on one of my
SCSI hard drives. This time when I try to do the install, it
finds my controller (I think it called it aha8 or something
like that), complains about some file not being found, and then
rattles down trying a list of aha7, aha4, aha2 before giving
up.
I heard there are some SCSI problems with the installation,
could someone tell me the specifics?
Kind of disappointing. It looks like I wasted a lot of time
and a CD-R on this, and it’s not going to work. I know sonewhere
in there is a great OS waiting to get out, but this was
discouraging.
Any explanations or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks!
