Delays when playing MP3s.

Hi everybody.

Have anyone noticed such thing - delays when
playing MP3s ? I mean, there are “pauses” when
I click the “Next” or “Previous” button of the Media
Player or, for example, I select a song in the List
Editor and press “Activate” - 2-3 secs of silence and
only then I hear sound.
What’s more curious - after ~2 hours of playing the
OS was suddenly restarted.

Secs of my computer: PII 350 MHz, 128 MB of RAM,
Sound Blaster Live!.

Thank you in advance.

BR,
Arturas B.

No help ?

I can confirm, there are pauses 6-10 secs under those circumstances in my system.

I would hardly call it a bug, it’s more likely a side effect of the way
the player works… 2-3 seconds delay when switching songs is not
exactly a huge problem…

And it’s not very surprising if you get longer delays on a slower
machine…
especially not when it’s something so much slower…

Was it only playing mp3’s or was it doing something else at the same
time that might have caused a crash/reboot?

Please try out phMAD - http://staff.qnx.com/~cdm/phmad/, it shouldn’t
suffer from these problems.

I agree it’s not big problem. But anyway I noticed the RTP
delays with GUI actions - when you press buttons, expand
trees (in the File Manager, for example) and so on.
And it’s strange a bit, since we know the RTP’s GUI is small
and fast.

I don’t want to say my problems exist because of bug in
the GUI of the RTP. It may be that only thing I need - to
tune my hardware/software(including OS).

Could anyone tell me what kind of “tuning” I may need ? ;^)

Best regards,
Arturas

Try

#renice 2 -p
It makes my system nice  Does it effect for your system?

Best regards,
Eduard.

Try
#renice 2 -p

I guess it changes the priority of the GUI
subsystem. Am I right ? ;^)
BTW, does it have any side effect ?

Does it effect for your system?

I’ll check it at home.

You are right. It decreases priority from 12 to 10 >

Audio out drops when I drag the scrollbar for big document, “renice” solves this problem. I don’t

know why the scrollbar widget utilizes so much cpu time, but I think we should leave Photon’s
widgets for QSSL.
We know the RTP’s GUI is small and fast, but not enough, IMO
BTW, my system suddenly stopped only once - i’ve found cpu cooler was stopped

I don’t remember the delays under QNX RTP 6.0 patch C. I hope RTP is developed in other manner then
windows, am I right? Or I must buy Pentium 2 GHz especially for QNX RTP next release? I’m sure
p166mmx is quite enough for mp3 playing.
BTW, the delays occur with plaympegaudio_noph also.

Maybe it is a bug in SB Live! driver? Anybody…?

Regards,
Eduard.

Well, what I meant was that a delay when changing files in a media
player, is not exactly something surprising, since there is a whole lot
going on at that moment.

And the delay on a p166 would naturally be worse than on a pII 300 since
the cpu is a whole lot slower, I never said that it wouldn’t be enough
for mp3 playing, and as I understand your post there is no problem with
actually playin mp3’s, only when it is changing file to play…

If the delay wasn’t there under QNX 6.0 patch C, then the problem is
probably due to some unexpected sideeffect from the changes in the OS.
I doubt that the mediaplayer has received that much attention during the
QA…

You are right, Chris! I have no any delays but I found other BIG problem. The mp3 songs sound very
badly. Sound seems to be slow (~10%) and very distorted. I did not try any other formats (only
mp3), but I’ve tried mp3’s which are in various bitrate and created by various codecs (lame,
BladeEnc…).Have you any ideas?
BTW bladeenc is compiled without any problems under QNXRTP.

Regards,
Eduard.
P.S. Thank you for QPR with license info inside.

What version are you running? Right now my webspace location is in flux but
should be resolved sometime next week, so you can’t get the lastest.

I downloaded phMAD from http://staff.qnx.com/~cdm/phmad/

Ok, I’ll wait for new version. The player’s suit looks well. Let me know your new url.

Arturas,
I was wrong. Delays are not “pauses” in my system, this is “silently playing” of first some
seconds. I don’t hear the begin of songs :frowning:

Try phMad (v.0.1.4) by Chris McKillop http://qnx.wox.org/phmad/

Unfortunately, this player causes another problem in my system - unwanted mouse events. I believed
I’d solved this problem by renice of io-graphics. But it’s true for many apps except phmad :frowning:
