Help with SMC 8035 (Abocom FE2500) NIC

I have a Compaq Presario 1621 laptop with CardBus slots and a SMC 8035 (Abocom FE2500 series dongleless) CardBus 10/100 PC Card. I have been having a heck of a time getting it to function at all. In fact, I have yet to be able to send ANY traffic across my network connection successfully. Until VERY recently, enum-pccard would not enumerate my adapter until I “hacked” the /etc/system/enum/devices/net file with an entry that was configured for the proper dev/ven id’s and bus topology. Now, at least when my system boots, I get a /dev/io-net/en0 device generated. I have plugged this card into both a LinkSys 8-port 10/100 autosense switch, AND a 3COM 5-port 10/100 autosense hub, both capable of full duplex, but neither have been successful. I have swapped out patch cables, and of course, I always verify that I am getting signal across (link lights, etc). The NIC itself always lights up with LINK, 100, FULL, PWR; which establish that the NIC is getting power, that it is running at 100Full Duplex, and that it has Link connectivity with the switch/hub.

Hardware specifics:
Notebook: Presario 1621
Chipset: TI PCI1131 Dual Socket CardBus
NIC: SMC 8035TX
Model#: SMC8035TX
P/N: 99-012055-000

I have included output for the following commands:
pin
pin cis
pin config
pci -vvvv
ifconfig en0
io-net -v -dtulip verbose=3 -ptcpip
2 ping’s

ANY input that could be provided would be GREAT! Thanks, this problem has been persisting for about 2.5 months now. I’m currently using RTP 6.1.0 (original GA dist. from ISO image from Aug.).

This bugs me because the SMC 8035 is listed as a supported NIC, what am I missing?

Thanks,

Alex Senkevitch

Does anyone have any insight into this at all? It’s getting to be quit frustrating at this point.

Thanks,

Alex Senkevitch

Thanks,

Hi Alexander,

How are you starting the driver? Have you tried starting the driver manually?
What is the output of pidin ar?

(Thanks for the other output as well).

Erick.

Now, at least wh
en my system boots, I get a /dev/io-net/en0 device generated. The NIC itself always lights up with LINK, 100, FULL, PWR; which establish that the NIC is getting power, that it is running at 100Full Duplex, and th

at it has Link connectivity with the switch/hub.

Hardware specifics:
Notebook: Presario 1621
Chipset: TI PCI1131 Dual Socket CardBus
NIC: SMC 8035TX
Model#: SMC8035TX
P/N: 99-012055-000

I have included output for the following commands:
pin
pin cis
pin config
pci -vvvv
ifconfig en0
io-net -v -dtulip verbose=3 -ptcpip
2 ping’s

ANY input that could be provided would be GREAT! Thanks, this problem has been persisting for about 2.5 months now. I’m currently using RTP 6.1.0 (original GA dist. from ISO image from Aug.).

This bugs me because the SMC 8035 is listed as a supported NIC, what am I missing?

I can (at the moment) answer your first two questions. I will post the output of ‘pidin ar’ tonight once I am in front of the system in question.

Q1:
You will have to forgive me, as the following content is being generated from memory and not from actually seeing it on the console.
I am, currently, starting the driver through a modified /etc/system/enum/devices/net file entry whereby I added the line:
device(cardbus, dev=ab02, ven=13d1)
ABOVE an already existing entry in the ‘net’ file, which was an already existing ‘cardbus’ entry that also happened to utilize the devn-tulip.so shared object, basically piggy-backing on that existing entries configuration. Prior to this modification, the card in question (SMC 8035TX) would NOT be enumerated by enum-pccard. I would have no choice but to go the manual ‘rc.local’ route of hard coding an io-net statement. Now, it is (apparently) properly enumerated (ie, /dev/io-net/en0 is created), and net.cfg is referenced by netmanager.

Q2:
Yes, prior to creating the hacked ‘net’ file, I was starting the process manually via either the CLI or an rc.local file entry. The entries looked as follows:
slay /dev/io-net
io-net -dtulip -pttcpip if=en0:1.2.3.4:255.255.255.0

  • or -

slay /dev/io-net
io-net -dtulip -ptcpip
sleep 2
ifconfig en0 1.2.3.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 1.2.3.255
route add default 1.2.3.1

The latter block would also possibly be executed via the CLI. As a further note, I am currently running QNXRTP 6.1.0A, with no change in function.

As close as I can figure, the “tulip” chipset is not talking with the MII PHY to determine link status/media from the MII Media Description Table.

Thanks,

Alex

PS, you can additionally reference a previous post on the matter made on 7/18/2001 by me in the ‘qdn.public.ddk.network’ group titled “MII register mis-read in devn-tulip.so?”

“Hardware Support Account” <hw@qnx.com> wrote in message news:9tedr2$996$2@nntp.qnx.com

Hi Alexander,

How are you starting the driver? Have you tried starting the driver manually?
What is the output of pidin ar?

(Thanks for the other output as well).

Erick.

Now, at least wh
en my system boots, I get a /dev/io-net/en0 device generated. The NIC itself always lights up with LINK, 100, FULL, PWR; which establish that the NIC is getting power, that it is running at 100Full Duplex, and th
at it has Link connectivity with the switch/hub.

Hardware specifics:
Notebook: Presario 1621
Chipset: TI PCI1131 Dual Socket CardBus
NIC: SMC 8035TX
Model#: SMC8035TX
P/N: 99-012055-000

I have included output for the following commands:
pin
pin cis
pin config
pci -vvvv
ifconfig en0
io-net -v -dtulip verbose=3 -ptcpip
2 ping’s

ANY input that could be provided would be GREAT! Thanks, this problem has been persisting for about 2.5 months now. I’m currently using RTP 6.1.0 (original GA dist. from ISO image from Aug.).

This bugs me because the SMC 8035 is listed as a supported NIC, what am I missing?

I have the additional information and command output you requested. The exact excerpt from the /etc/system/enum/devices/net file is as follows (the numbers indicate line numbers):

83: device(cardbus, ven=13d1, dev=ab02) [line added by me]
84: device(cardbus, ven=1011, dev=0019) [the remainder was original to the file]
85: tag(devn)

Hi Alexander,

How are you starting the driver? Have you tried starting the driver manually?
What is the output of pidin ar?

(Thanks for the other output as well).

Erick.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have a Compaq Presario 1621 laptop with CardBus slots and a SMC 8035
(Abocom FE2500 series dongleless) CardBus 10/100 PC Card. I have been

having a heck of a time getting it to function at all. In fact, I have yet
to be able to send ANY traffic across my network connection successfully.
Until VERY recently, enum-pccard would not enumerate my adapter until I
“hacked” the /etc/system/enum/devices/net file with an entry that was
configured for the proper dev/ven id’s and bus topology. Now, at least wh

en my system boots, I get a /dev/io-net/en0 device generated. I have
plugged this card into both a LinkSys 8-port 10/100 autosense switch, AND a

3COM 5-port 10/100 autosense hub, both capable of full duplex, but neither
have been successful. I have swapped out patch cables, and of course, I
always verify that I am getting signal across (link lights, etc). The NIC
itself always lights up with LINK, 100, FULL, PWR; which establish that the
NIC is getting power, that it is running at 100Full Duplex, and th

at it has Link connectivity with the switch/hub.

Hardware specifics:
Notebook: Presario 1621
Chipset: TI PCI1131 Dual Socket CardBus
NIC: SMC 8035TX
Model#: SMC8035TX
P/N: 99-012055-000

I have included output for the following commands:
pin
pin cis
pin config
pci -vvvv
ifconfig en0
io-net -v -dtulip verbose=3 -ptcpip
2 ping’s

ANY input that could be provided would be GREAT! Thanks, this problem
has been persisting for about 2.5 months now. I’m currently using RTP 6.1.0

(original GA dist. from ISO image from Aug.).

This bugs me because the SMC 8035 is listed as a supported NIC, what am
I missing?
