QNX 6.1 RTP boot loader failure

(I’m new to both QNX and newsgroups, so if I make a breach of etiquette
please let me know…)

I downloaded the QNX RTP 6.1 base iso (~20MB) and burned it to a CDR,
because I wanted to install QNX into its own partition. I used a partition
resizing program to resize my Windows XP partition to make room for the new
QNX partition. I then inserted the QNX CD and rebooted…

I tried to install QNX several different times, but installation would
always abort at the partition formatting screen and leave the new QNX
partition corrupted (and unbootable). After several installation attempts I
discovered that choosing the option NOT to install the QNX boot loader to my
primary (Windows XP) partition would allow installation to finish the format
and copy all the base packages to the new partition.

My Windows XP partition is set to be the active partition, and I can boot
QNX if the QNX CD is inserted. However, once I get QNX fully installed I
would like to have a boot menu of some sort. What is preventing me from
installing the QNX boot loader and how can I fix this? I tried disabling the
boot sector virus protection in my BIOS but it doesn’t help.

If you need more information, let me know. My PC is a fairly standard setup,
though.

Buy a copy of System Commander. It’s a friendly, full featured boot manager.

Update:

I fixed the problem. Turns out it was a bad CD, and a new CD fixed the
partitioning and boot loader installation very easily.

Actually I have Paragon Software’s boot loader, but it doesn’t seem to have
an entry for QNX. I did get the QNX boot loader to work fine (see other
post).

Thanks for your time.

…nice “TOFU” (like we say in Germany g) that you’ve been giving us.
please check out some information about how to quote. should be available
for every language.

but what i really wanted to say is that you mustn’t buy boot managers. if
you use winXP and installed it that way (what i do every time):

primary:
c: FAT about 50 megs boot partition (DOS installed)
extended/logical:
d: NTFS as much as U like WinXP system
e: NTFS … WinXP programmes
f: NTFS … WinXP swap

you can easily put a new line and bootsector to the NT/2k/XP boot menu via
the DOS software bootpart which is available from:

Also it’s not a big deal to copy QNX bootsector into the file and insert a line for this file into
boot.ini. I wrote a lot about it in this newsgroup
