319512 dev-hirun kbd fd -d/dev/kbd msoft fd -d /dev/ser1

I’ve tried everyting to work out why this is ahppening but i just can;t find
a reason.

It works fine under Windows98

I swapped the video card
then i swapped the network card
then i swapped the mouse or a genuine microsoft serial mouse

same problem.

weird

any help greatly appreciated.

andrew

I only have this problem when there is mouse/kbd/video switch involved.

I see this problem as well. With the conference CD it went away
when I replaced the Matrox card with a 3dfx card. Using the downloaded
iso image I can run Photon for a few minutes using the 3dfx, then I get
these extra mouse events described by Andrew. I seem to remember a connection
with the screen saver at one point - the events would start up after
the screen saver ran once. Now it starts after a few windows are up.

My mouse is dev-hirun args are the same as Andrew’s (and that is what
I’d expect them to be).

The io-graphics args are: -g1012x768 -dldegv-banshee.so -IO -d0x121a.0x6 -R70

i have the problem, too - it doesn’t matter what video mode and happens
whenever i’m in photon. I’m new to rtp and qnx and I think i like it, but this
mouse problem really sucks. makes me almost want to go back to winblows.

pentium 500
64 MB
NVidia Vanta (TNT driver used)
standard PS/2 wheel mouse

Do you have a KB/MOUSE switchbox that you’re using to share your mouse and
KB between RTP and Windows?

No - I never even heard of what you’re talking about. I only have 1 mouse, 1
keyboard, & 1 graphics card. Does it help to mention that I’m booting from a boot
disk?

Not really.

I’m trying to figure out what’s causing this, and your machine is outside
the bell curve for most reports. This typically seems to happen on slower
machines with serial mice, but it does happen with some PS/2 mice, but
usually on slower CPU’s.

This is the first I’ve heard of it on a 500 MHz machine.

It almost sounds like you got the devi-hirun from QNStart that enables
wheel mouse support, but it didn’t work with your mouse. What did you
mean when you said standard' PS/2 mouse? standard’ in that context really
just means it has the right shaped plug. What make and model of mouse is
it, and did you get a devi-hirun mouse wheel driver from QNXStart?

I also had a mouse here at home that seemed to work fine in windows,
but would constantly do just what you’re talking about on RTP. I eventually
figured out that the cable on the mouse was bad, but the vendors proprietary
drivers have some way of detecting when this happens and syncing back up
again.

I get the same problem on a serial mouse on a Pentium 233 with sis
video. I had been assuming that it may be partly due to hardware issues
since I get missed characters when I try to access a modem using this
box and port but QNX4.

I have also seen this on another box when using the OEM RTP. After
installing the latest release - all ok.

The problem is much worse when the mouse is over an actively scrolling
pterm window.

Just some more info to put in the pot.

Andy.

I got a good solution from:jkinraid@clear.net.nz (Julian Kinraid) which
is to up the priority of dev-hirun as follows:

:sin -P devi-hirun
:
:The first number from the left is the pid of devi-hirun, now do
:
:renice -2 -p thepidnumer

Swapped out my HP wheel mouse with an Artec 2-button el cheapo and fixed the
problem. BeOS R5 & Win98 had no problem the HP, but I guess it wasn’t as
“standard” as I had originally thought. sheepish grin Now that I can actually
use RTP without using the keyboard for everything, I can tell that I like this.
:^) Thanks!

bumping up the priority of the dev-hirun driver worked for me, although
sometimes there is a still a minor glitch, but nothing to worry about too
much.

still, an official QSSL solution would be nicer.

cheers

Can you expand on that a bit?

Were they both PS/2 or serial or different types?

I’ve tried at least four different serial mice including Microsoft and no
name brands and none have fixed the problem.

The only thing that has made any difference was the tip that someone else
suggested to up the priority of devi-hirun, and even that isn’t perfect.

In Message-ID: <hfIE5.12407$6O5.1101493@news1.rdc1.mb.home.com> (in
comp.os.qnx, on oct. 10), Eric Peterson suggested this, that worked
well for me

Hi,
I had the same problem, but eventually fixed it.
The problem was that QNX was improperly detecting my wheel
mouse. You need to tell QNX RTP what kind of mouse you really
have. In my case, QNX was booting my wheel mouse as a standard
Microsoft mouse using the following command (drivers for both
keyboard and mouse): devi-hirun kbd fd -d /dev/kbd msoft -R fd
-d /dev/ser1 This command should have been:
devi-hirun kbd fd -d /dev/kbd msoft -i fd -d /dev/ser1

To fix this: Get your machine node name using “uname -n”
Create the file /etc/config/trap/input.<nodename
(In my case the file was named input.Beauty)
The contents of this file is a single line containing the
correct
arguments for devi-hirun. For me the file contained:
“kbd fd -d /dev/kbd msoft -i fd -d /dev/ser1”

Small notes: first you might want to check out what it is already
using.

pinid ar | grep devi from a console window will do that.

What did it for me, was removing the -R switch.
