long delays setting up ethernet interface

I see this message upon boot:

‘netmanager error: Could not get current interface configuration (en0):
can’t assign requested address’

There is no IP connectivity immediately after boot, but it magically
starts working some time later, without doing anything. Problem
disappears if a dumb hub is inserted between PC and our ‘smart switch’.

If your switch is set to auto detect try setting that port to 10 or 100. I
know Cisco 29XX have a lot of problems here, and I’ve heard about the same
problem with other smart switches.

I found a knowledge base entry pertaining to this:

These are not fatal errors. ‘netmanager’ is just reporting that it
cannot get the current ip address setting for the interface. When the
full stack is started, no IP address is assigned to the interface. This
is not a true error condition. ‘netmanager’ will be updated to not
report this situation.
