Compact Flash Speed

What kind of speed are people getting when reading Compact flash (ATA).

I suspect the read speed that I obtain is “normal” while co-worker thinks
it’s abnormaly slow.

I have found that read and write speeds vary from manufacturer to
manufacturer. I have also found that write speeds are more highly
variable between manufacturers than read speeds.

When I started working with Compact Flash, I looked into this very issue
because I assumed, wrongly it turns out, that Compact Flash is
commoditized to the point that performance should be very similar from
manufacturer to manufacturer. What I discovered is that most
manufacturers use different firmware, sitting between whatever flash
technology they’re using and the IDE bus. So, even if two different
manufacturers use exactly the same parts internally, their firmware may
be different and that firmware can contribute significantly to the
performance of the device.

As to specific rates, I’m afraid I’ve never run benchmarks so I can’t
give you hard data.

Hope this helps,
Eric
