XFree86...

Can you run X without photon? And if so, how?

Pete Eddy

Go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/openqnx and get XFree86 4.2. There is
also a mailing list with hints on how to setup it up (there is a small trick
with the mouse you need to know).

Also, if you have the “Public CDROM” that was released with 6.2 you have
everything in a much nicer package format. Once you have /opt/X11R6 (either
from the package on the CD or from the openqnx tarball) you do this (as root):

setconf CS_LIBPATH /opt/X11R6/lib:getconf CS_LIBPATH
/usr/photon/bin/devi-hirun -Pr ps2 mousev ← Assumes you have a ps2
/opt/X11R6/bin/X -configure
cp /root/XF86config.new /etc/X11/XF86config
/opt/X11R6/bin/startx

Thanks Chris, I’ll give it a try.

I want to see if Xwindows apps behaved better with out Photon. Using
DDD, and Nedit it seems that the file select boxes act a little odd. I
double click and nothing happens. So I click until the mouse starts smoking
and it finally excepts the double click. Maybe I’m missing something in the
configuration.

Does XWindows (not X of Photon) use the same graphics drivers as Photon?

XFree86 uses their own graphics driver set. You can refer to
http://xfree86.org/ for support for different video boards. In 4.2 they have
pretty good support for all newer video boards.

I have the X server starting up, and I added blackbox to my .xinitrc. But
it just brings up the server without any window manager.
I looked at /opt/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc and I thought that it should
have started something when I didn’t have a local one.
What is the sequence of events once I run startx. Is there a way to get out
of the X server once it starts. I thought on other systems ctrl-alt-
key got me back to the command line but that doen’t seem to do anything
under QNX.

For getting back to the command prompt: ctrl-alt-back space works under QNX.

Check that you machine name resolves correctly - i.e. if you are “localhost”
then make sure that there is a 127.1 for localhost in your /etc/hosts.

The easiest way to configure your machine name is through the network setup
in Photon. Otherwise you can also manually change it in /etc/net.cfg.

/etc/hosts I edit manually with something like vi or jed.

You can also check everything with ping - for instance

ping localhost

The networking IS working. I wanted to know what you did to configure
Xwindows on QNX.
What do you have to change from the default configuration that comes with
XFree86?

The easiest way to configure your machine name is through the network
setup
in Photon. Otherwise you can also manually change it in /etc/net.cfg.

/etc/hosts I edit manually with something like vi or jed.

You can also check everything with ping - for instance

ping localhost

That’s in the default hosts file.

For getting back to the command prompt: ctrl-alt-back space works
under
QNX.

Check that you machine name resolves correctly - i.e. if you are
“localhost”
then make sure that there is a 127.1 for localhost in your /etc/hosts.

I have the X server starting up, and I added blackbox to my

But
it just brings up the server without any window manager.
I looked at /opt/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc and I thought that it
should
have started something when I didn’t have a local one.
What is the sequence of events once I run startx. Is there a way to
get
out
of the X server once it starts. I thought on other systems
ctrl-alt-<Fx
key got me back to the command line but that doen’t seem to do
anything
under QNX.

Thanks Chris, I’ll give it a try.

I want to see if Xwindows apps behaved better with out
Photon.
Using

odd.

double click and nothing happens. So I click until the mouse

Oh - that was what you meant - sorry about that.

The easiest way is to run the x-server in configuration mode:

  1. Login as root
  2. Run /opt/X11R6/bin/X -configure

The above will detect the graphics card(s) on your system and create a basic
XFree configuration file. Look at sourceforge under the OpenQNX project.
Frank wrote a very nice “getting started” message in the mailing list
(http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=581842&forum_id=99).

I did every thing that was talked about there.
The Xserver is starting up,
I can wiggle the mouse,
BUT the Window Manager which is in xintrc
file isn’t running, clicking the mouse does nothing!
How do I get debug the fact that the window manager is
not running???
