Local Display of Remote Photon Application

Dear All,

Is it possible to run a Photon App on a remote QNX RTP machine and direct the display to appear on a local QNX RTP machine over TCP/IP?

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

Yes and “not quite at this time”. Check out the utility called
phrelay. However the there is still a missing part, phditto. This
should be ready sometime soon however. If you have Phindows then
it also sort of works, but not officially yet, (Phindows is a Windows
client that you can run Photon remotly)

Currently, it is only possible to do this on a Windows or QNX4 client. The
application is called phindows (for Windows) and phditto (for QNX4).

What you are looking for is phditto for RTP, which is not available yet (as
far as I know)

QNET can do something like this…

This may be true at this time.

This is only one way of doing it. When all the pieces are there, he may
also run the Photon server on the local machine and the Photon App on the
remote machine (similar to XWindows). He would not have the display (at
all) on the remote machine, but only on the local machine.
If he wants the Photon server to run on the remote machine (i.e display on
both machines) then phditto is indeed the way to go.

From the tenor of the question - “direct the display to appear on a local
QNX RTP machine” I believe he is asking about the “Photon server on a
different machine” option.
I believe that once all the wrinkles are worked out of QNET that this will
indeed be possible (if not already!)

I’ve done this, it works… mostly.

In fact, I just opened a pterm over the network to one of our servers here.

The simple way to do it is to (once qnet is running on both hosts) enter ‘PHOTON=/net/my.local.host.name/dev/photon /usr/photon/bin/pterm’ without the quotes on your remote machine.

But yeah, there appears to be a few kinks to be worked out yet. Oops, now the pterm just disappeared, I wonder where it went off to…
