Printing Kudos and a question

Hi the to printing group. I just bought a HP DeskJet 950C printer. This is
SUPPOSED TO BE a near photo quality printer. I was disappointed to see the
results under Windows with the HP driver that came wiht the printer.
Apparently, if you don’t have 4 GB of RAM the driver can’t do it’s best to
print in photo quality mode.

But much more disappointing was that it took forever (1 hour and 45 minutes)
to print a full page photograph. I bought this printer to print photographs
but I can’t use it if it is that slow.

So, I tried it under Photon. I was very impressed that it was VERY fast. I
was printing at 300x300 and I tried QNX dithering, Error diffusion and
Halftone printing. They were all very fast.

So now here’s the question. Now of them were near photo quality. How can I
improve the print quality. Can I go above 300x300? I have photo editing
software that can do anythin with the image.

Also, how do I tell pv to print exactly the pixels in the image? I don’t
want it to expand the image. If I am printing 300x300 dpi and I print an
image that is 1200x900 pixels I expect it to be exactly 4" x 3".

Hi Bill,

I have spoken with one of the developers and you could try editting the
/etc/printers/pcl.cfg file and add a higher resolution to it.

Let me know if it works.

Hi. I formatted my image to 600x600 and saved it as a BMP. I then added a
600x600 option to the pcl.cfg file. I then loaded the image with PV. I
looked great.

I went to print the image. I went into properties and selected the 600x600
option. I then tried to print the image. The printer light started
flashing (which means that it did receive some data) but then nothing.
After just 1 second there was no CPU load. And there was no new data going
to the printer.

Good for you Bill; personally, I’m not very photogenic

Hi Bill,

Could you try printing the following way?
That is:

  1. Open the BMP in pv.
  2. Print the BMP to a PHS file.
  3. Run the printer filter manually from the command line, e.g.,
    $ phs-to-pcl -or600 print1.phs > /dev/par1
(assuming your printer is attached to /dev/par1)

Also can you tell me the file sizes of the BMP and PHS files.
Thanks.

The output to the .phs file was 224 bytes. I’m guessing that that is not a
valid file. Or you folks have found one hell of a compression algorithm.
My bmp file is about 2 MB. A jpg of the same image is about 700 kb and
produces the same 224 byte phs file. At least your consistant.
