I have 3 computers running QNX 2.21 in the Gulf of Mexico. I am in Houston
and need to make archive copies of the OS and the 5 node expansion disk. All
I have available is my computer running windows, is there a software package
that can run under windows and read/backup these QNX disks?
Hello,
You can use the DOS command diskcopy a: a: even with QNX floppies. It should
work.

Hmmm your sure about that? I thought that diskcopy could only read
FAT formatted disks. Also will diskcopy, copy the boot sector of the
QNX floppy?
I think the best way is to download QNX6, install it on the
Windows based system, then boot into it, get a shell and do a
Source:
cp /dev/fd0 /tmp/floppy_backup
dst:
cp /tmp/floppy_backup /dev/fd0
That should do it.

I can confirm this. Diskcopy does a track by track copy
without any regard for file system format.

Yes; the only thing that diskcopy doesn’t like is “odd” sectors/track,
which is what antique DOS programs (asteroids comes to mind, anyone have
a copy?) used to use as “copy protection”. Other than that, it does,
like Mario sez, a track-by-track copy…

Yes, I did this 2 weeks ago to backup my QNX 2.21 disk and the install disks
of the CII compiler and it worked fine ! However I do not know if it works
with the network expansion disks !

Using the diskcopy of DOS is also much faster than a file copy of QNX 2.21
like ‘cp 3:/ 1:/’ or ‘backup 3:/ 1:/ +a’

Yep, I’ve done this myself.
The only way I’ve found to copy the network expansion disks is to get a disk of
the same physical size (I’ve tried formatting a 1.4 3.5 as a 1.2 5.25, but no
go…) and bulk erase it, then use the format command to only format the first
two tracks. Then, use the dump (?) ddump(?) command to dump the first two
tracks of the n/e disk to a file, then dump that data to the new disk. I have
been rather nervous about using the original all the time, and not being able to
back it up but this seems to produce a useable disk.
