Porting guide & HOWTO needed

It would be great if there was a “porting/compiling guide” or some sort of
document that provided information, hints and tips on getting applications
to compile and install, and what to try if (when) things don’t compile.

It seems that many Linux applications can compile for RTP, but usually need
some tweaking of the configure/make process.

I’d like to be able to try things out and be more independent instead of
having to humbly ask in this newsgroup for help every time I hit the
slightest problem in compiling some software.

It would also be great if QSSL was to let us know what the strategy is for
porting. Is QSSL planning on doing much porting itself? Of what? Will
there be somewhere we can request ports? etc etc

Thanks

Andrew

By asking in these newsgroups you make us aware of issues we may not
be aware of, uncover potential compatibility issues and bugs, and contribute
to our FAQ’s

If you do figure out how to tweak config scripts on your own, please continue
to raise any issues you run into to our attention.

Yes, but it might not be the best business strategy.

Is QSSL planning on doing much porting itself?

We do port some things, but we’re mainly in the business of implementing
things.

Photon is not X, and I don’t think you’ll see much in the way of straight
ports of XWindows from us. We would want to `Photon-ize’ them.

Of what? Will there be somewhere we can request ports? etc etc

Request them here. Someone may already have it. If you port something,
contact freesoft@qnx.com (As Mario knows… don’t panic if they don’t
get back to you right away).

Hi Pete,

I’m mainly interested in command line stuff anyway like PHP, Python and
perhaps one day we’ll see PostGres.

Don’t care much about Xapps at this stage. I’ll use Windows for graphically
things.

Regarding a “porting/compiling guide”, I’m mainly just wanting to somehow
benefit from the wisdom of the people who know how to get something to
compile. For example, Python 2.0c won’t compile and I don’t have any bag of
tricks yet for trying out things to try to make it work. I feel like a bit
of an idiot having to come back here every time I want to get something to
work and begging for help from your good selves. I’m sure you are very busy
anyway.

In the coming months, the QDN will be expanding to give you greater insight
into the QNX realtime platform. You’ll find indepth articles on our APIs,
programming tips, and learn how our customers and independent developers use
QNX on a daily basis. One of the suggested articles/FAQs is tips on porting
to the QNX RTP.

Feel free to submit other suggestions, comment, or contributiions at
http://10.4.0.12/report/rate.html . We want to know what you think, what you
want to see on the QNX RTP (and the QDN) - and what you’re doing with the
QNX RTP.

Of course

How about a set of steps for creating a set of custom boot floppies for
doing a minimal bootstrap install on a device for which networking but no CD
are available?
