QNX and Adaptec SCSI

Hi All,
I recently moved to a new machine at home and decided to install QNX/NC on
my
old 300MHz PII machine. It has an IDE CD/RW drive and a pair of 17GB SCSI
drives attached to an Adaptec card (2930 UW, I believe).

There is nothing I can do to get QNX to install on this machine.

If I boot off a QNX 6.1 CD (yes, done 6.2, too), it alternately has
trouble finding my CD-ROM drive and after it announces it has found
a SCSI card, fails to find any disk drives.

If I install under Windows and boot with a floppy disk, things go well
up to the point it asks me what video card I’ve got (Matrox Millenium II)
and the system hangs. I can’t select any options with the mouse (MS wheel
mouse on PS/2 port).

This is a fairly old machine and the devices are fairly well-respected
(adaptec, matrox, PII, etc.).
Any suggestions?
Cheers,
Randy Hyde

could be a problem with your video card. there are some discussions here:

Do you have access to a non-NC version and another system. You can
build a custom boot image on another system and boot it on a floppy to
get your home system started.

It’s a pain in the butt, but I’ve had to do it on other systems with
uncooperative hardware. And it will work eventually. Hint: it is
much better if the two systems are side by side. I took me several
attempts of trial and error.

I am not sure what version fixed that, but QNX6 used to have problem of not
being able to install if CD and HD sit on controllers of different type (IDE
vs SCSI) due to some genuine stupidity in the installer. If that’s your
situation, it might be worth to try an external SCSI CD (assuming your HD is
SCSI), if you can borrow one.

As of video problems… Assuming the installation is completed, you need to
disable Photon before it gets into graphics mode (hit space bar when
prompted, then select ‘safe’ modes). Once you boot to text mode, you can
edit /etc/system/config/graphics-traplist file (it generally will have two
lines - first for you card, second for either VESA or SVGA mode - swap those
lines and VESA/SVGA will become ‘first choice’). Then you can restart and
Photon will probably work, albeit sluggish.

Okay. I can also install an IDE drive to get things going, if that’s the
problem.
(I think I still have a SCSI CD-ROM drive laying around, too; probably
too old to be bootable, though).

Thanks, I will try that.

I think Adaptec SCSI BIOS will emulate floppy, much like El-Torito BIOS does
this with IDE CD. In any case, the CD drive does not really have a lot to do
with booting, so it should not matter how old it is.

BTW, my “hanging in graphics” problem turned out to be
unrelated to the video card or the SCSI drives.

I have an IOGear KVM switch and when the mouse is connected
to the system through the switch, the system doesn’t recognize the
mouse. Plug the mouse in directly, and it works.

Hey I ran into the same issue with a Belkin Keyboard/Video/Mouse
“extender”. QNX freaks out when the mouse comes through the extender,
but doesn’t seem to have an issue with it plugged in directly. Also QNX
seems to be a bit touchy about cable lengths and so on. I wonder if
they couldn’t “loosen things up” a bit in that department to make it
work better over long distances…
