Can't ping with Cross Over cable

Hello All,

I’m not sure if I do this correct. I’d like to ftp some files from my
laptop (XP Professional) to to a Neutrino machine using cross over cable.

After set up IP on both machine, I can’t ping either way.

ping response: network, host is down.

If I use the same setting (IP addresses and the cross over cable)
between 2 laptops (both are XP Pro), it worked fine, I can ping between
the 2 laptops.

Did I do something wrong? probably setting on Neutrino network setting?

Thanks,
-ronald

I’ve experienced similar problems with QNX and Windows. It’s a hardware
problem.
After the communication wires, there are some auxiliar wires in the cable
that are powered from one side and used by the other side
to confirm that there are something connected. Some adapters doesn’t apply
the correct voltage, so the other side can’t see nothing
connected. The easiest solution is using a hub or a switch with paralel
cables.

Using straight thru cable is Ok. We’ve tried different ethernet card
with same result on the cross over test. I’m just curious, why it
wouldn’t recognize other machine.

maybe we should set the duplex/speed of the ethernet card
on both boxes manually. my guess is the default is
auto-negotiate and it doesn’t work unless you have a hub/switch.
