When QNX 6.3.1 ?

I would like to know when an updated revision of QNX (NC) 6.3.1 will be
released, featuring the following expected changes :

  • Functional installation/booting over 8.4 GB (I cannot install anymore
neither 6.3.0 nor 6.2.1 on my new 200 GB hard drive).

  • (Re)installation even if the key had expired, instead to prevent
    installing under NC license.

  • Correctly installed sound driver, such the C-Media without having to
reinstall it by hand from http://mike.qnx.org.ru/cmi/index_e.htm !

  • Install EVERY media codec without installing the header files. Users
would have to remain obtening the TDK to use/develop on the drivers.

  • Update the screen utility to handle multi monitors

  • Release some TDK for free, such the AlphaLayer. At least for VESA
cards… OpenGL for VESA would have been great too, but I admit you have
to make some money too

My definitive review :

6.1.0 was very open but with restrictive hardware support.

6.2.1 had a better hardware support but offered a restrictive NC revision.

6.3.0 get even better hardware support BUT with a SO RESTRICTIVE licence
that we cannot use it anymore in its actual form. Even the 30 days trial
period is LIMITED with NO MEDIA and FEATURE support (thus got no
opportunity to code my own OpenGL software for instance).

I expect QNX o release the pressure a bit for 6.3.1 and allows NC coders
to ‘promote’ the valuable QNX system by releasing powerfull and no
restricted software for free…

Or at least, stop promoting QNX to geeks like me, making false promises of
freedom of coding…

How come I never saw you at any of the meetings?

That limit is the 64 GB one not 8.4 GB. IDE is such a mess.

It’s working correctly, anyone with a current license installs normally.
This is a non-issue, just tweak the date to perform the install.

That’s a third-party supported driver, it’s in the public repository,
what more do you want?

I’m with you on this one but I assume there is a good reason, so one
solution is to grabs the old ones from the 6.2.1 installation and here’s
a helpful link to speed that up …

  • Update the screen utility to handle multi monitors

Multi-monitor is supported and always was afaik, maybe you mean
dual-head drivers for dual-head cards?

OpenGL works fine in software rendered mode even on VESA  Alphalayer
I think is driver dependent.

The lack of hardware accel opengl looks set to continue as it’ll depend
on someone to donate the cost of developing driver for NC use, not to
mention that the common AGP cards will not be an option until there
respective companys decide to build the binaries themselves. After all
that’s the way Linux is getting it’s current 3D accel.

Yeah, was working fine on my 40 GB IDE hard drive. Now refuse to install
itself on my 200 GB, even if the first partition only makes 4 GB  And if
I install it on the primary partition, Windows gets scrambled (nothing
new)

The C-Media driver is installed, but not functionnal. To get it work, I
must reinstall the package  Not too difficult, just annoying…

Grrrr…

  • Update the screen utility to handle multi monitors

Multi-monitor is supported and always was afaik, maybe you mean

That’s it, I use a great Matrox G550 Dual-Head. Multi monitor support is a
new feature from 6.3.0, but badly handled, as we have to edit a poorly
documented script to gets things working (half a way) !

  • Release some TDK for free, such the AlphaLayer. At least for VESA
cards… OpenGL for VESA would have been great too, but I admit you have

Yeah, but few things such OpenGL and AlphaLayer should be left free coding
instead to ask for a TDK

I understand, and don’t ask QNX to make their own drivers. Even SkyOS,
Zeta, OpenBeOS, … makes their own drivers !

How come I never saw you at any of the meetings?

I would, I would  I’m leaving in France. And I’m also active on various
other systems, and expected QNX to take a bigger part of my geeking

Because the license has expired, remember this is the full commercial
product. I consider this a rather simple hack.

It just requires the driver to be able to handle it, same for all the
other graphics features you have listed.
