lpd filters

Does lpd’s input/output filters for TCP/IP[v4.25 or v5.0] printing works
for remote TCP/IP printers?

TCP/IP “Remote Printing Utilities” doc says there are those options,
“/etc/printcap” doc
doesn’t have them in it’s option table.

It seems no filter is spawned with lpd, and ‘if=…’ or ‘of=…’ is just
ignored (((

Is it true?

Thanks
Oleg

Filters don’t work with remote printers.

If you want to use a filter with a remote printer then you can create a
local “virtual” printer that applies the filter (of=XXX:lp=/dev/null) and
then inside the filter you can redirect the output to the actual remote
printer. You end up with two entries in the printcap file.

Hope that makes sense,

Thanks, Robert!

I make my printer to work the proper way now )))

If it were some words in docs about the feature, there’ll be no problem
at all.

I’ll add it to the docs. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is this an indirect hint that there will be an upcoming QNX4
patch/upgrade?

No, but we did release some patches (including docs) to QNX 4 and its
friends a while ago (last December, I think). We do still support QNX 4,
and there could be patches in the future, so it makes sense to maintain
the docs. If this thread is also relevant to Neutrino, I’ll update those
docs too.

Glad to hear that. All those sad news were quite threatening…
