QNX over the holidays

Hi folks

I see nobody else has mentioned this, so I suppose it falls to
me, since I noticed…

Thanks to the generosity of the owners of QNX, all of us staff
folk are going on holiday until January 2nd, starting at noon-ish
on Friday 22 December.

Now, people being what they are, there might well be one or two
people working from home, or trying to squash a bug that won’t
let them sleep, (or trying to get a patch up for the world… )
but don’t expect a full house at this end, OK?

Since I’m by no means The Voice Of QNX, I guess it’s OK to slip a
quick personal note onto the end of this message. It’s been
an… interesting year to watch the QUICS community as it navigated
its way onto QDN. I’ve been posting (and lurking more often than
not recently) into this community for almost 4 years now,
starting with Tech. Support, and now as part of Training
Services. I think the thing that makes me feel the best about us
as a group is the way that we’ve developed our own set of helpful
“elders” who seem to go out of their way to help folks out.

To some extent, it’s the job of those of us inside the building to
pitch in when and where we can. We don’t always get it right,
but we’re getting paid for it, so the effort is expected to some
degree. It’s the people outside, who do it without a paycheck,
who impress me the most. Mario, Mitch, Warren (“Mr.
Popcorn”…), Igor, and a whole lot more - thanks. Both from me
as an employee, and me as a guy who finds the world a slightly
better place knowing that there are still some helpful and
friendly people around.

Gosh, that sounds like I’ve been listening to too much Christmas
music, doesn’t it?

Anyway, whether the next little while is a holiday for you in a
religious sense, or just a chance to get together with some
friends, take my best wishes for a happy one with friends and
family.

You’re welcome. I like helping people out, and hopefully they’ll like helping
me out when I get in a bind (which happens more often than I like to admit). I
also appreciate learning from all those folks as sometimes you get answers to
problems that you didn’t even know you had.

Let me know how the popcorn cannon turns out!

Heh. If I’m a role model, you guys are in deep doodoo! I’ve always thought of
myself as more of a roll model, and I especially like those jelly filled

Well, I’ve got The T-Shirt and that thing can’t be compared to paycheck. May
be you should start awarding one annually as there are other guys who
perhaps deserve it more

Thank you and happy holidays and new year to everyone.

For those of you who haven’t been around a while, and especially
for those who weren’t at our QNX 2000 conference in Vancouver
last spring, Igor (who most of us had imagined to be about seven
foot tall, almost as wide, heavily bearded, and possessing a
Cossack’s disposition – all of this from his rather…
forthright postings on QUICS) was presented with a T-shirt that
said “I am Igor”. This from a group of senior QNX developers,
all wearing “I’ve been Igored” T-shirts.

Hmmmmmmm. Not my department, but what about the idea of the
community awarding a virtual tshirt award to the most deserving
candidate in the past year? I can’t organize it (don’t ask how
much Photon course material I have to write in the next
month…), but if someone else wants to run with the ball, I
think it would be a great idea. I think I’d nominate Mario for
the 2000 “virtual T-shirt for outstanding helpfulness” award.

Thanks guys, I’m flattered.

I’m receiving more from this newsgroup then I can ever give,
and that’s why I’m doing it. I’m old enough to know why I’m
really doing this, it’s surely not because I’m a saint…
We’d have to switch to alt.psycho.deep to get into that
