Good bye Audrey

3Com announced today that it would shut down whole Internet Appliances
business, including Audrey and Kerbango. They think internet appliances
have a potential but will most likely be non-profitable until some
years later. So, they can’t keep loosing money given their losses happen
to be even worse than originally anticipated. Marketing will stop now
and manufacturing will cease by May.

I guess Audrey will soon become a collectible item for true QNX fans ;}
Good bye Audrey, you had such a short life but we’ll remember you young
and beautiful…

It is real bad news since 3com was (I believe) one of major driving
forces behind development of multimedia features for Neutrino. ;(

my personal (and non-qnx view) is that most of this stuff will appear in the
car first, along with pda’s all connected in.

so the multimedia side is still a very important aspect of what qnx needs
to do…

just think of it:

browser client front end
gecko html engine
plugins galore (realaudio, flash, java, streaming mp3)

all as separate processes wrapped around a high availability framework.

my personal opinion is that qnx is the best architecture to provide the
above… (okay so i work here and am in sales, but hey, i still really
really believe that!)
