Need Help

How do I take the file system backup on the Jazz Drive working with QNX
4.24. I am very new to UNIX or QNX OS. I would appreciate a detailed
description of the procedure.

Thanks

We use Jazz platters for both file system backups and as a streaming tape
(using pax command. For setting up a Jazz disk to use the QNX file system,
we do the following (normally the Jazz disk is formated for DOS). You need
to look in /dev to see if the Jazz drive is setup as hd1 or scsi1, make the
change needed below.

  1. mount -p /dev/hd1 (this will allow you to open the Jazz Platter using
    fdisk)

  2. fdisk /dev/hd1

3)press C(hange) from the menu, change the partion number from 6 to 78,
accept the values for the starting and ending cylinders, press U to make it
unbootable, S to save.

4)umount /dev/hd1
5)mount -p /dev/hd1
6)dinit -h /dev/hd1t78
7)mount -p /dev/hd1 /dev/hd1t78 /jazz

You should be ready to go. At this point there will be a dirctory in root
that is called jazz, just cd /jazz, ls and you should see 4 files (.altboot,
…boot, .bitmap, and .inodes), you can now copy things to the Jazz platter
as if it is any other directory on the QNX computer.

When we use it as a “tape”, we just create a file of all of the files we
want to copy to the jazz disk (with complete pathnames), then just
cat “filename” | pax -wv -t /dev/hd1

the only problem is you cannot run chkfsys on the drive afterwards to make
sure that you have no bad blocks on the platter. We are in the process of
changing to a file system backup.

If you install QNX on a hd that is connected to a udm 66 or udm 100
controller
these are not supported.

Strange… I am having a Seagate Medalist 17GB harddisk connected via a 80pin
cable to my i810 MB’s ATA66/33 controller and bios says it is on UDMA/66
mode, and I NEVER had ANY kind of problem (both when I insatlled it under
win2k and now when it has full partition of its own).

HALLELUJAH… how you guys manage to get those kind of systems… btw now
since its not running qnx, you should give it to me… and have my i810
with an ata66 seagate medalist 17GB HDD and 128MB ram running qnx rtp
FLAWLESSLY since eternity…

That’s probably because your hd controller is build in the chipset. What
I was talking about ( sorry for not being clear ) is “external” controler
like
Promises or High Point
