Dunce question: screen shots?

I’m a technical writer and have a project to document a system that runs on
QNX.

I need to do some screen captures, but I’m totally ignorant as to how to
proceed. My unix background is verrrrry light. Any help or suggestions
greatly appreciated.

If you are using X-windows (you’re probably not) as you GUI, then you
can use the xgrabsc. I don’t use Photon, so I don’t know much about
screen captures there, but I believe there’s a utility called “snapshot”
for that.

Here’s the text of a 3/30/2000 post to this group about snapshot:

I’m trying to use “snapshot” to get a screen shot of my
user interface (the goal is to have this temporarily
available to the customer through a command line interface),
but the output file is not viewable. It says I can create
a “BMP Spool File” or “PS Spool File”, but no program I have
seems to be albe to read them. They say the file is bad.

You may need to configure a BMP Spool File first. Then
when snapshot is running, pick this printer, and click
on “Print to File”.

Hope that helps.

No, not using X-windows. It’s a pretty spartan, character-based interface
for the most part. Thanks for the input.

If you are running QWindows, we use an old piece of software from Klondike
called Freezeit. I found a link on www.t-tcp.com but the page wouldn’t
come up.

If you are using text only, there is a utility on Qnx’s web site I believe
called ‘prtsc’ which allows you to capture a console to a file.

For character mode stuff, there used to be a utility called prtsc,
however for your purposes (documentation) you might consider accessing
the screens via a Windows PC. For the least hassle, I recommend K-95 -
i.e. Kermit for windows. See http://www.kermit-project.org/k95.html.

Are you using Photon? There’s a utility called snapshot that will
dump screens to .bmp files.

sound like a pretty nomal non-dunce question. A dunce question would be “Can I
run my windows software on RTP?”
