QNX 3.21 Supported Tape Drives

The tape backup unit in out QNX 3.21 server has just bite the dust.
the tbackup config (version 2.5) supports Archive Scorpion units, and
Everex/Tecmar/Wangtek units and a final type specified as “s”. Our older
manual does not clarify what “s” stands for (Syquest?)

Does anyone know what new units are still available for our system? Tape
drives are failure-prone enough without having to scrounge up a used
drive ?

Well, I have my doubts that you’ll find any tape drive supported under QNX 2
still available. Our QNX 2 backup system started to act up a year or two
back. It seemed the problem was in the tapes rather than the drive, but we
couldn’t even buy the 60MB tapes anymore.

We now back up our QNX 2 system through an (ARCNET) network link to our QNX
4 server, using the Devnet/Dev.net device drivers provided in the mig24
toolkit, and QNX’s standard qcp, along with some scripts to create file
lists for qcp. E-mail me for more information if this method might help
you. It’s not fancy, but it works.

Hello,

There are still tape drives that will work with QNX 2 (v3.21). We installed
several new QIC tape drives last year on QNX 3.21. We used tape drives that
have a SCSI interface along with the “sbackup” program that added support
for SCSI drives. Pretty much any SCSI tape drive will work as long as it is
SCSI 1 format (or at least that is what I recall). This was because we
could only get ISA SCSI cards to work in our systems. The tape drives we
used are the Tandberg SLR 5’s in QIC format. You can find them at
www.tandberg.com and then can request a reseller in your area.

I am not sure if the “sbackup” program is available through QNX so if you
can’t find it email me and I can send it to you.

Yes it is now more difficult to setup a QNX 2 system for backup but it is
not impossible. Good luck and hope this helps.

Jim

sbackup is not sold by QSSL. It is a 3rd-party product that was sold
by (I think) Florida datamation. They are no longer in the QNX business.

sbackup was designed to be a plug-in replacement for tbackup, the QNX
tape archive command, but to talk to different hardware. (SCSI tapes
instead of QIC-02.)
