Qnx a huge disappointed

I have waited for Qnx OS for over a year but I’m very disappointed.

The reason for this is the I see now that Qnx is just unix with a fancy
interface and this is nothing for the basic user who like something
better then we have today win…

What I liked was the speed and this is what will make me come back to Qnx
but right now I’m stuck in the config HELL!!!.

So if somebody could please give some hints on how I get the modem to
work then I would be extremly happy.

after typing : qtalk -m /dev/ser1(2)

I do not get a ‘ok’ just the normal form with what is running but
nomather what I try the modem will not work.

Can any one help.

have you tried to run phlip and configure your modem for Internet access?
apparently after that configuration you would need anymore run qtalk each time...
BTW, you have to startup photon prior to run phlip...

No it is definitely not UNIX!

Do you really think the interface is fancy compared to what is possible with
some of window managers available with X?

In the literature QSSL state that RTP is a real-time operating system with a
small footprint. ie. It is targeted towards embedded applications.

Richard. Tell me. How does Quake3 fit into this embedded applications
scenerio? You keep talking about QNX and embedded. Yet, RTP is a desktop
OS with numerous multimedia features and non-embedded specific features.

Adam.

My guess is that quake III is a demo of what QNX can do with 3d graphics.
Imagine an imbedded application in some medical instruments that composes the
slices from a cat scan into a 3d model of the human body, or parts thereof,
and allows you to do fly-throughs of the body, looking for disease.

Some may disagree by I’d be willing to classify a PlayStation or N64 as an
embedded system. Also, as others have pointed out, QNX delivers a very
scalable platform. If you haven’t clicked on the Real World Applications
link on the QNX web site you should – and don’t pass up looking at the list
of customers currently using the system. Finally, anyone who has heard
their MP3’s stutter, their video look like Max Headroom, or made CD
coasters would have to agree real time is a Good Thing for desktop systems.

You may have read previous posts and tryed it already, but I’ll
re-iterate in case. If you know the com, port and irq of your modem then
login as root and type the following into a terminal:

slay devc-ser8250
devc-ser8250 -u[com#] port,irq

For example, devc-ser8250 -u2 2f8,4 would configure com2 with port 2f8,4.
To test try:

qtalk -m /dev/ser[com#]

type ATZ
you should get ‘OK’ back.
type ATDT
you should hear a dial tone
ctrl-a and ‘q’ to quit.

I’m not disappointed. It’s free and it’s got problems but it’s new and
there’s plenty of time to work out the bugs.

My guess is that you didn’t get any nookie last night.

Don’t worry, you’ll get some eventually.
