NOTE ABOUT PCI MODEM SUPPORT:

After hearing several queries about PCI/SOFT-MODEMS, THEY ARE NOT IN
ANY FORM SUPPORTED BY QNX/LINUX/RTP OR ANY OTHER PLATFORM BESIDES
WINDOWS! THROW THE PIECE OF JUNK OUT (AND THAT IS WHAT A SOFT-MODEM IS)
AND GET A PROPER ISA/EXTERNEL SERIAL MODEM!

I hope that this answers any queries relating to this topic.

Matt

I asked in another thread about PCI modems that are supported by QRTP - Do
you know of any? I need my two built in serial ports for other connections
so it needs to be com3. If no PCI then which ISA ones work well. I checked
the H/W list on the QNX web site but didn’t see any modems listed for QRTP.

there are real pci modems (not win/controllerless) but rather expensive 70$+
I hear the pci callwaiting modem is a real modem ,as it does work in linux,
least the box says so, as far as ISA most isa modems are real modems, and
cheap too I bought mine 20$ like 2 years ago, if the box on it says winmodem
stay away, the box may say requires windows, but it may just say that couse
it only gives windows drivers for it, the best thing is find a place with a
good return policy, like best buy, and if its not a real modem return it and
get another to you find on that works

It seems that you’re failing to differentiate between Winmodems and PCI
modems. There are PCI modems that are not Winmodems, ya know? I’ve bought
and installed them, and I don’t know why you’d want to keep buying ISA
peripherals when you can get the same thing in PCI. Considering how long PCI
modems have been around, I don’t think it’s asking too much for QNX or any
other OS to support hardware PCI modems. I believe BeOS does (BeOS also
supports some Winmodems, FWIW), and I imagine Linux supports PCI hardware
mdems by now .I think I’ve also heard something about Linux supporting
softmodems, but I’m sure about BeOS.

Nick

just grab either a dynalink or a swann smart modem, both are very good, cheap
and trouble free modems

Yes because Be was able to convince Lucent and PC-Tel to release their source
code to them to port it to the BeOS plaform. However, considering that RTP
is a public pre-release and that there are many more aspects that have yet to
be added, QSSL may be able to port the required software to RTP. For those
who donot know what a softmodem is:

A softmodem (or winmodem) is a modem that uses software to modulated and
demodulate rather than an onboard chip set in the case of an externel modem
or an ISA. This allows computer assemblers such as dell to reduce the cost by
since the card has bugger all chips and everything is done via software thus
reducing the total cost of production. From my price list, a 56K PCI Modem
costs approx. $NZ26 +GST compared to a ISA or externel that may cost up to
$NZ95 + GST. The only other company that has ported a driver to the linux
plaform for softmodems is Dynalink, however, it is not open source.

I hope this posting has set the record straight.

PCI modems are commonly associated with WINMODEMS, I have have to admit I made a
simplistic statement, however, most PCI modems I have come accross have been
Softmodems, however I have heard that there are PCI hardware based modems
available, however the reason I suggested an ISA or an externel modem is that
you can be guarenteed that it will be hardware based.

I own a ISA ISDN passive Modem (AVM), which is supportet for Linux and
Windows. Is there any way to got it run under QNX ? I have no hope, Cause
BeOS didnt regonized it as a Modem also.

thats a tricky one, I am not too sure about ISDN modems as I have heard that
they are very touchy pieces of equipment. If it is supported under Linux you
could port the driver to QNX  otherwise it is most likely not supported.

I’m not good in write drivers or to port software. But AVM said also that is
is to make. The Prob I dont know If the Capi Driver is the only thing I
need, and I dont find a gui for gcc also. And I dont know where I must get
the include files. could anyone help ?

3COM make a pretty decent PCI Hardware modem, which they’ve nicknamed
the Hawk…might want to try it out.

Does it work under QNX 4.2x and QRTP?

Also don’t post to multiple newsgroups - pick the one you think is the
closest then wait for an answer. Having questions/comments repeated in
several areas causes many difficulties.
