I seem to be having a problem with my dial-up
networking (or possibly my external modem - I’m
not sure which)
After working out that I needed to login as root
in order to set up dial-up networking (my normal
login simply soundlessly failed when attempting
to create a DUN setting, because it didn’t have
write priviledge for the dialup folder) I
successfully created a DUN setting.
The problem arises when I’m attempting to connect
to my ISP.
RtP dials my modem OK, seems to get over the
handshaking, the ISP accepts my username and
password and then… nothing. My connection gets
unceremoniously dumped.
Is this one of those “free” ISPs - like AltaVista, et al. ?
If so, you may be out of luck (at least for now)
Those guys depend on advertising revenue in order to be able to supply you
with the “free” internet access.
So - they need their special programs that show you the advertising running
Since you cannot do that under QNX RtP (at least not yet), they would
unceremoniously dump the connection.
( I do not know how they detect the lack of advertising capability, but they
do! )

I’m in the UK, and it is a free provider (Freeserve), but their income
is sliced off the call charges, so it isn’t dependent on advertising.
They don’t work if you have “caller line id” disabled, but work happily
in other circumstances and o/ses.
Hopefully there might be a resolution, as I see a number of other
people on the newsgroup with the same problem.

Bingo !!!
Their makeing money selling your profile and phone number to advertizers.
Nothing is free.
Got any Junk phone calls and junk e-mail? or junk snail mail?
Dump the free service and watch it all dissapear. (:-Þ
I’m not sure that they make money that way, since I’ve not had any junk
email on that id, nor any junk snail-mail. I think this is one of the
benefits that the UK enjoys from strong “data protection” legislation -
if tell freeserve that I want to opt-out of their attempts to sell my
information on to 3rd parties, they are badly liable if they do so. Its
a nice arrangement for us.
So the main way they make money, as I said, is by taking some of the
cost of the call charge - a proportion goes to the telco (BT) and a
proportion to them. This is the downside of the UK telco situation (as
of the time of writing…)
